Isaac Newton was a scientific genius whose discoveries changed the way people thought about the world. He solved complex mathematical problems and invented the branch of mathematics called calculus. He investigated light and through experiments proved its relationship to color. And he established universal principles about how gravity, force, and motion work and are related. These principles became known as Newton's laws. Underneath Newton's public image as a genius was a man with real problems and failings, a complicated, sometimes unpleasant person whose interests and desires did not always match his legend.

Although he was a gifted man, Sir Isaac Newton did not have an easy life. Author Rosinsky gives the reader a picture of a man with many talents who struggled through a lonely childhood and adulthood. Newton was born prematurely on Christmas Day 1642 in Great Britain, to a mother who had been widowed three months before. Newton was a sickly baby and many thought he would not survive infancy, but did. When Newton was three years old, his mother Hannah married a well-to-do minister named Barnabas Smith who insisted that Isaac be sent to live with his grandparents. Thereafter, the little boy didn't see much of his mother and felt abandoned by her. At the age of twelve, he was sent to boarding school and returned only for holidays. Newton excelled at mathematics and had an ability to look for answers to complicated problems. Later, he became a professor of mathematics at Trinity College. He began to look at mathematical problems and study the mysteries behind light, color, and vision. His work led to the publication of a book called The Principia. This book examined simple laws that explained complicated concepts, thus showing Newton's scientific genius and contributions to the world.
