Overview

Excerpt from Sir William Huggins and Spectroscopic Astronomy

Several of the volumes of this series are devoted to the biographies of eminent men, and in such a case the personality of the man himself, and the struggles through which he had to pass furnish the chief points dwelt upon. Thus Vol. XXIII gives a sketch of the life of Thomas Huxley, and, as was inevitable with such a subject, the character of the man himself as a man among men, a born fighter and controversialist, quick, resolute, fearless, is placed in vivid portraiture before the reader.

William Huggins, fifteen months the senior of Huxley, was a man of an entirely different frame and disposition; not less devoted to the study of Nature, and endowed with gifts not inferior to those of his great contemporary, the path along which his inclination drew him was that of quiet persistent research, and public controversy was preeminently distasteful to him. For the one man, the joy of conflict furnished the crowning zest in every enterprise, without which it lacked something of the true flavour of life; to the other, dispute or contention spoiled any inquiry however attractive in itself.
