But Jo knows better—there's trouble brewing, and in 1925, all that glitters is not gold. Caught up in a swirl of her cousin's bobbed-hair set—and the men that court them—Jo soon realizes that this world of jazz and gangsters and their molls hides a nest of lies. But when she befriends the girlfriend of one of the most powerful and dangerous gangesters in town, Jo begins to uncover secrets—secrets that threaten an empire and could destroy everyone she loves. Jo is faced with a choice: hang on to her soul, or lose herself in the decade of decadence.

[A] gripping tale!
From the Publisher
"Yes, there’s a mystery here. It involves Jo’s supposedly dead brother, Lou’s gangster boyfriend, bootlegging, a bombing, missing pages from a journal, and more than a few Dark Secrets. All of which was quite fun, though it’s not why Sirens was a stand-out for me. . . . Sirens is a celebration of girl power, sisterhood, and hope for the future." —Leila Roy for Kirkus Reviews blog

Children's Literature - Claudia Mills
When seventeen-year-old Josephine (Jo) Winter is abruptly packed off in May of 1925 to her aunt and uncle's posh Manhattan apartment, she knows the reason isn't the one offered by her Pops: that it's high time she meets a "proper guy" and gets married. Her sudden departure has to be connected with the mysterious disappearance of her beloved brother Teddy a year ago and her bootlegger father's increasing involvement with gangster kingpin Danny Connor. Little does her father know that soon she'll be more imperiled than ever, as Connor pursues her ruthlessly to get his hands on the journal Teddy left behind—and that the seductions of the Jazz Age will leave Jo yearning to use her newfound freedom to do more with her life than find a man to take care of her. Readers intent on unraveling the numerous mysteries intertwined in Jo's story will need to accept the unbelievable premise that Jo would read Teddy's journal in leisurely installments rather than turning immediately to the end to find out why Danny Connor is willing to go to such menacing lengths to uncover Teddy's darkest secrets. Only too late does Jo think, "I only wished I had time to read the rest of Teddy's journal." Indeed. But readers will enjoy tagging along on Jo's wild ride through the world of Prohibition-era speakeasies, gangster molls, flapper fashion, Gatsby-style Long Island mansions, and freedoms seized, at whatever the cost, by newly enfranchised young women. Reviewer: Claudia Mills, Ph.D.

    This book is good

It lacked a bit of 'spark' but was a very exciting window into the times. Overall a very good YA mystery/historic fiction read.
