Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"An outstanding collection of stories." -Voice of Youth Advocates

"Jane Yolen is a gem in the diadem of science fiction and fantasy." -Analog

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Although Yolen (The One-Armed Queen) has published a great deal of acclaimed SF and fantasy (and children's fiction), this is her first collection of genre stories for adults--and it has been worth the wait. Three of the 28 entries here are new, and all draw deeply from themes of justice and independence, while typically spurning traditional sentimentality in favor of clear-eyed, sometimes grim realism. Yolen has a particular knack for redaction, finding new resonance by retelling old folk stories from novel points of view. The Nebula-winning "Lost Girls," for example, turns the familiar story of Peter Pan into a feminist revolt. The revisionist Snow White of "Snow in Summer" defeats her wicked, snake-handling stepmother with her own wits--no need for any prince. The ignorance of anti-Semitism brings tragedy to characters in "Granny Rumple" and "Sister Death." Meanwhile, "The Gift of the Magicians, with Apologies to You Know Who" merges O. Henry's Christmas classic with a cautionary tale of Beauty and the Beast. Feuding mobsters get more than they bargained for in "Under the Hill," which Yolen playfully describes as "Damon Runyon meets the elves." "Blood Sister," "The Traveler and the Tale" and "Speaking to the Wind" echo older themes from Ursula Le Guin's work, but the powerful title story, which also won a Nebula, closes this collection on high notes of originality, creativity and hope. As Yolen writes, "Stories are not just recordings. They are prophecies. They are dreams. And... we humans build the future on such dreams." (July) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
VOYA
Popular young adult and children's author Yolen has created for adults an outstanding collection of stories that librarians might recommend to mature teen readers who enjoy their fantasy turned upside down. Three of the twenty-eight stories are new; all are written beautifully, leaving the reader thinking long after the book is closed. The stories have an O. Henry-like twist at the end, but Yolen's imagination is much bigger. In the title story, for example, Emily Dickinson's mysterious reclusive nature finally is explained. After aliens take her and her dog into space and show her Earth, Dickinson understands that "The universe was hers, no matter that she lived only in one tiny world." In The Uncorking of Uncle Finn, a Christianized, proselytizing elf runs afoul of an intolerant abbot and winds up inside a bottle of Bordeaux '79, unable to be released except by another human. When Finn's nephew later reads of a future time in which the castle harboring the wine bottle will be taken apart, stone by stone, to be reassembled in America, he imagines the result: "Uncle Finn you will have before you an entire continent to convert for a land that saves its saviors in plaster and seeds the heavens with saucers should have no trouble at all accepting a bottle saint." The voices that speak in these stories are voices of weary experience, ribald knowledge, wisdom, and satisfied desire. The stories are filled with the "inside jokes" that all adults carry within themselves. Yolen draws from her own rich background and history here, using knowledge of folklore, mythology, persecution, and reality to write fantastic, marvelous versions of "fractured fairy tales"—not only the silly ones, but alsothose true to the form, the ones with dark, ugly underbellies. This is a book to read before you recommend it, both for your own enjoyment and to offer a more knowledgeable recommendation. KLIATT
Jane Yolen, author of numerous YA and children's books, articles, and short stories, both fiction and non-fiction, has been winning awards for her writing since 1968. A professional storyteller, she moves with ease from one genre to another, as magically as her protagonists move off the page and into the imagination. Sister Emily's Lightship is a collection of short stories. Styled to emulate myths and legends, fairy tales and folklore, the tales feature protagonists who instantly draw the reader into the plot. "Snow in Summer," a retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves," adds a modern twist and a surprise ending. In "The Sleep of Trees," the Huntress goddess proves that man, though god-like in appearance, is no worthy match. In "The Traveler and the Tale," a woman travels back in time to plant tales that will help change the future of a culture. Many of the stories have dark endings. Issues such as homosexuality and feminism, as well as a bit of bawdy humor, add a more adult theme. The last chapter is an informal set of brief descriptions on how each story was birthed. Recommended for classroom reading and discussion. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2000, Tor, 300p., $13.95. Ages 16 to adult. For adults? But...

Some retell classic tales with different endings and others are completely original, but all are great stories.

    An Amazing Book!

I got this book as a Christmas present. As I had never heard of Jane Yolen before, I was wary in approaching this book. I am very glad that I did. It is the kind of book that grabs your attention and keeps it there. I do not recommonded this book for younger children, but as a teen and a very avid reader I heartly suggest this book!
