Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Eleven-year-old Ivy Miller is having a tough year. Not only do her parents decide to separate, but her older sister, Lacey, tells her—"I hated it when you were born." Bewildered by her parents' decision to divorce and her sister's cruelty, Ivy struggles to make sense of recent developments in her family. When her older sister moves into their father's new apartment, Ivy takes a stand and declares that she wants a "sister divorce." Ivy's request to officially split from her sister parallels her parents' decision to separate. When the tensions between the girls finally erupt in a physical brawl, their parents intervene and hatch a plan that encourages the girls to patch up their differences. Unlike Parent Trap, where the daughters bring the adults back together again, Ivy's and Lacey's mother and father remain separated. The book focuses instead on the reconciliation between Ivy and Lacey as they begin to accept their parents' decision to divorce. The book provides a light-hearted and positive representation of the anger and sadness children may experience when parents divorce, as well as the inevitable conflicts that occur within families. Part of the "American Girl" series. 2001, American Girl, $14.95 and $5.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer:Elizabeth Marshall
