Great Intro to the Jewishness of Jesus!

Ann Spangler & Lois Tverberg have given me one of my favorite and most frustrating reads of the past couple of years. I got a review copy of their new work Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus a couple of months back and it has hung around in my hand and in my backpack constantly with me since then.

First the frustration: For some reason, it took me forever to finish this book.

Why the frustration: I'm perplexed because I really really liked this book.

So, I have been constantly frustrated that I was toting around a book that I loved and wanted to read but for some reason couldn't just get through. This is no reflection on the book as it is a needed work in my opinion. I am often asked what books I would suggest as "must reads" or what are some good books on history and Jewish context since I use a lot of it in my teaching. This book jumps in the top 5 on both of those lists.

    Here's Why.

Readability: The book covers a lot of ground about Jesus and his world. The writer's pick up on a lot of the tradition, symbolism and missed wordplay that takes place in Jesus' interactions with his followers but you never feel like you are bogged down in a technical work. The book covered a great deal of familiar ground, if you read a lot on 1st century Palestine, but the presentation and explanation of some technical symbols is great. This leads me to my next favorite thing about the book - sourcing. I read a lot on the first century world but I often really struggle with books that make claims but have nothing backing up the ideas. This book doesn't do that. Spangler & Tverbeg patiently and thoughtfully source their propositions. This is huge if you are reading this and will be using it for teaching or discussing with others.

The book really hits stride for me in the middle of the book. It really is consistent; doesn't bog down but really grabs you in the chapters on Passover and the feasts. I think you see the book at its best in these chapters as it clearly shows how Jesus relates to the feasts and how much of what he does fulfills, explains and expands the traditions of the people as experienced through the calendar feasts. The book also comes with some great resources in the appendices about the feasts and includes a much appreciated glossary.

So.This book has become my new intro book for people who are interested in the Jewishness of Jesus. It is accessible, informative and insightful. The questions at the end of the chapters are great for discussion and the book as a whole would be a great group read. I'll be buying these to give away.

    I Also Recommend:

    Ann Spangler and Lois Tverberg

I have read numerous books on looking at Jesus' life from a 1st century perspective. "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus" is one of the most masterfully written books on the subject for the newly initiated. (Worthy of note is that this will serve as a great continuing reference addition to my library, too, with all the background footnotes included)

The authors' treatise exposes the reader to the myriad of exciting discoveries about the feasts, many of the parables of Jesus and other nuances about His life that normally are glossed over by the Christian reader of the Bible. I agree wholeheartedly with the previous reviewer of the masterful job that Spangler and Tverberg did in presenting the newcomer with just enough Hebrew to expose both concept and beauty of the language without overloading. I too was deeply impressed with the supporting documentation throughout this entire work - taking great care to not ever make declarations without attribution.

This is a smooth read and highly recommended not only for an introductory exposure to an enlightening perspective of studying Jesus' life, works, miracles, but also to illuminate the perspective of even the most learned traditional seminary student of the Messiah as well.

Excellent - Buy it! Insightful, connects with Jewish side of Jesus.

Reading this book really helps to connect you to our Jewish Brothers and Sisters who love Jesus. Many Christians forget the early church was Jewish; it's customs, traditions and understanding of Jesus' teachings are illuminated in this book. We are not to become Jewish but understanding their background and especially importance of worship and prayer takes one beyound the typical Christian view. Want to be more connected with our Rabbi Jesus? Buy this book and read it again and again.

    For Truth Seekers!

An absolute necessity to understand the Bible. Informative in that it places emphasis required on subjects that unless the reader lived during Christ time he would not be aware of. This will enable the truth available to those seeking to be clear. A "time travel" for believers and seekers that will open up the truth like never before! This will give the reader a perspective that is simply not available unless consciously sought by researching. Here's the product of that research in an easy to understand format that will draw you closer to God through his Son.

    This is a must read!

If you are ready to dig deeper in your Bible study this is the book for you. It is an excellent idea for Christians to find out about our Jewish roots because they help us understand the Bible much more clearly. We cannot interpret the Bible correctly if we do not understand why Jesus said something the way He did. There are so many things Jesus said that His hears knew exactly what He was referring to because they KNEW the Old Testament scriptures by heart. How many of us can say that? Read this book and then read and understand your Bible.

Learning to Bless our God, King of the Universe!

Because the faith I hold dear came from the Jewish people I am so glad these women wrote this book. It is an authentic means to learn the Jewish ways of honoring and worshiping our God, King of the Universe.
Since we are eons aways from the days when Jesus walked the earth we non-Jews are not familiar with the Jewish mind. When you read this book and learn their early methods it is life changing, enlightening, and pure joy.
I recommend this to anyone longing for a closer relationship with our Jewish Rabbi Jesus........Blessed is He!
