Overview

Born of the Hunkpapa Sioux tribe in 1831 in South Dakota, Sitting Bull rose to become the most defiant American Indian chief ever to roam the Great Plains. He entered the coveted warrior class at the age of 14 after successfully battling the Crow. Developing into one of the most important chiefs, Sitting Bull was able to unite a multitude of Sioux and Cheyenne bands at his camp, which continually expanded as the tribes sought safety in numbers. It was this camp that General George Armstrong Custer found on June 25, 1876, when Custer and the 7th Cavalry advance party were defeated at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The Sioux-Cheyenne victory was short-lived as thousands more outraged soldiers pursued them, forcing their surrender. Sitting Bull was finally brought down in 1890 by tribal police who had been sent to arrest him. In Sitting Bull, read about a man who refused to back down from his convictions, remaining faithful to his culture and to his tribe until the day he died.

Legends of the Wild West brings to life the fascinating history, lore, and culture of the great American frontier from west of the Mississippi River to the wide expanses of the western prairies and deserts. Each volume is a compelling portrait of the best-known frontiersmen, women, and settlers of the West.
