Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
The story begins with a boy sitting in a box reading a book. Soon a giraffe wants to join him and then amazingly an elephant joins the boy and the giraffe. Then a monkey and a grumpy lion want to enter the box. Soon a hippopotamus wants to enter. The boy realizes that the box now has too much in it and explains that someone must go. No one wants to leave until a flea jumps right in; the flea's entrance begins the departure of all the other visitors. Now the boy who began the story can enjoy his box and his book. This reprint of a cumulative tale has wonderful, cartoonlike illustrations from Jon Agee; these illustrations allow readers not really to care about the box's location or how all these animals can fit inside this particular box. Preschool readers can look forward to repeating the line, "Let me in, let me in." and beginning readers can use the illustrations and sparse text to help them read the story by themselves. The joy of an empty box is an additional bonus to the whimsical illustrations and humorous story. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk
Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
At first glance, a story of a boy and an empty cardboard box would seem devoid of potential, but an elephant, a giraffe, a monkey and a host of assorted other jungle animals enliven the situation considerably--especially when all these creatures wind up with the boy, in the box. Things get pretty cramped in there, and the boy is beginning to wonder how to deal with his unwelcome company when a flea joins the party. The ability of one tiny flea to send an elephant catapulting into the air is aptly and hilariously illustrated. The quiet conclusion finds the boy in his box, alone again, with a book about wild animals in his lap. Agee's distinctive pictures are full of lush vegetation and lively detail, and the book's charm is heightened by its demonstration of imagination's transformative power. Ages 3-7. Sept.

'sitting in my box' a BIG hit

My son's prescool teacher read this book to the class often. And she would have a box that they would climb into while reading it. A big hit among the children I must say...
