    A must read

I highly recommend “Six Cherry Blossoms and Other Stories.” Alicia Appleman, winner of the 1989 Christopher Award for “Alicia, My Story” and best-selling author has written another compelling autobiographical work. It is a collection of short stories. The first story, “Six Cherry Blossoms”, is geared to elementary school children. It is a parable, featuring Blacky, the little cherry branch, who is threatened with death at the hands of the land developers. A blue jay named Simon helps him flee to Sedonia. Alicia, too, fled destruction and certain death. Along the way, she had some kind people who helped her. Another story deals with her life before the Holocaust. In “Childhood Memories” Alicia describes her warm, loving family. Her mother, father, and 4 brothers as well as all other family were killed. She is the only survivor. “Cyprus” poignantly describes her and other Jews’ cruel treatment in a concentration camp – like facility on Cyprus, after the war, when the Holocaust survivors were not allowed to enter Israel. In the “I Love Israel” story, Alicia writes of a new world – a world filled with oranges, palm trees, and fragrant flowers. Don’t miss reading these moving stories
