This book reprints the six easiest chapters from Feynman's celebrated Lectures on Physics (LJ 12/15/63), which the Nobel Prize-winning scientist delivered from 1961 to 1963 at the California Institute of Technology. Intended for as wide an audience as possible, these chapters are primarily qualitative in nature, with a minimum of formal mathematics. They discuss atoms, basic physics, the relation of physics to other sciences, the conservation of energy, gravitation, and quantum behavior. While this informative work provides a relevant historical perspective on the essentials of physics, the result is somewhat superficial. Nonetheless, because Lectures on Physics is out of print and because the information is still relevant, reprinting these specific chapters was probably a realistic move. The material will be readily understood by scholars, physics students, and informed lay readers. Recommended for academic and public libraries. Meet the Author

Richard P. Feynman was raised in Far Rockaway, New York, and received his Ph.D. from Princeton. He held professorships at both Cornell and the California Institute of Technology. In 1965 he received the Nobel Prize for his work on quantum electrodynamics. He died in 1988.

    I have been away from Physics for awhile and this was a very enj

    I have been away from Physics for awhile and this was a very enjoyable refresher. Dr Feynman is a very good lecturer.

    This was for my grandson--he loves it!

    My grandson is a high school senior who likes science and math--particularly physics. His teacher is strong on the math part, but finds it hard to articulate the essence of the ideas. Grandson says this book gave him a lot of insight he'd been lacking.

    Who knew physics could be so engaging

    I brought this book along on vacation as a lark and was glad that I did. I found it very engaging. The concepts the Feynman put forth were clear (mind you I had to read over sections a few times to get it sometimes but it was undertandable). This book was far from dry.

    Nook terrible for tech bpols

    Figs. cannot be resized, nook is useless for tech books 4 stars for Easy Pieces. But buy hard copy. 1 star for nook!

    Somewhat disappointing

    Feynman is a good writer and explains the principles of physics clearly, but unfortunately his illustrative figures and equations are much too small to be seen, much too small for e-ink to reproduce. This is a fault in the editors of these issues; in the paperback versions they are easy to read. The figures are essential to understanding his explanations.
