This book can teach us all lessons. However, it is written in such a way that I felt like I was with Joe and his sons. I could hear the conversations going on. I was delighted to read a story of overcoming struggle and adversity without it being a struggle to read. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone read this book, whether parents or not.

As the father of two boys, ages 14 and 11, I found this book very inspiring, uplifting, and valuable. The authors deliver beautifully on the title's promise to tell a powerful story about how a father raised six successful sons and the back cover's promise to articulate the ways in which confidence, fortitude, pride, persistence, fearlessness, and focus are important for a successful life. But beyond that, the organization of the book and the excellent writing gave the experience a depth of richness beyond what I anticipated and more pleasure than I could have felt justified in expecting.

As parents, we can all learn from Joe Massengale's experiences. Each of us has our own story our own struggles, our own past. What makes Joe's story special is how he transcended incredible adversity all the while providing his children with invaluable lessons and character traits.

Six Lessons for Six Sons, written by Joe Massengale and David Clow provides a enlightening approach to providing your children with important gifts to guide them through life. The authors have identified the gifts that help individuals believe in themselves and develop the strength to deal with the inevitable setbacks we all experience, and rise above them. This book is extremely well written, unpretentious, and presents, in a simple straight forward way, six qualities that lay down a foundation for living a rich, admirable and principled life. Massengale and Clow do an outstanding job of presenting these lessons in a way that should inspire fathers (and mothers too) to look at the art of raising children to be productive members of society. It stands head and shoulders above all of the self help books on the market today. The six lessons are ones that I wish I had in raising my own sons. Kevin J. Lots of so-called 'self-help' books claim to be inspirational or different - this one really is. Joe Massengale's biography alone is a heck of a tale - tieing it to object lessons in the art and science of raising responsible adults (is there a harder, more important job in the whole world?) makes this book important. The writing's a bit repetitive here and there but overall a cut above what's usually found in this genre: it lets Massengale's voice, his character and his wisdom come through loud and clear - through the man himself and his six sons - and that's what matters. The problem of absentee fathers in the African-American community is well-reported, and Joe Massengale happens to be African-American...but his lessons are universal.

This book was a delightful surprise: Not only did it discuss bringing up children with strong and powerful lessons - but it also provides guidance on how to run a business and the values of living a good life.I would recommend it as a business book, as much as a parenting book, and have given it to both of my children to read.

I teach elementary school students of all different backgrounds. Instead of posting my usual 'classroom rules' next August, I will be posting the 'six lessons' on my classroom wall. This book is a true inspiration for parents, teachers, and students from all walks of life.
