Overview

"No way in hell you could survive 'out there' with six men. You couldn't live thirty minutes 'out there' with only six men."                [pg. 13]

In 1965 nearly four hundred men were interviewed and only thirty-two selected for the infant LRRP Detachment of the lst Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. Old-timers called it the suicide unit. Whether conducting prisoner snatches, search and destroy missions, or hunting for the enemy's secret base camps, LRRPs depended on one another 110 percent. One false step, one small mistake by one man could mean sudden death for all.

Author Reynel Martinez, himself a 101st LRRP Detachment veteran, takes us into the lives and battles of the extraordinary men for whom the brotherhood of war was and is an ever-present reality: the courage, the sacrifice, the sense of loss when one of your own dies. In the hills, valleys, and triple-canopy jungles, the ambushes, firefights, and copter crashes, LRRPs were among the best and bravest to fight in Vietnam.

    The 'Other War' Revealed

The author takes you beyond the scenes of big unit combat to the actions of 'usually six' men scouting the jungles, mountains and valleys for NVA and VC units and tracking their movements. A small reconaissance unit whose primary purpose is gathering information on the enemy, they become masters of stealth, patience, silence and team work. Always at risk of being discovered they are trained with remarkable E&E'escape and evade' tactics. Too often, very outnumbered, and with no more places in which to escape, they become tiny fighting forces of unbelievable effectiveness, courage and valor. Being skilled in map reading, radio communications, and controlling fire missions with artillery units and air traffic controllers promotes their survival and the demolition of the enemy who are closing in on them or just moving through the jungle unaware of the explosive wrath about to descend on them. These 'Lurps' become a brotherhood enriched by a common bond of trust, ability and commitment. They will leave no one behind. They go in as a unit and come out as a unit. Many of the helicopter pilots who regularly insert and extract them are cut from the same cloth and take incredible risks for the Lurps. Each man has a specific job under the watchful eye of their team leader. Whether moving stealthily or in their night scurity wheel, action is never far away. This author brings it all to life almost as if you are there.
