“Sixes and Sevens” is a work of literary fiction. With its bleak atmosphere, direct prose, and clearly-drawn characters, the story invites comparison to the work of noted short story writer Raymond Carver.
Reed, the central character, is happy. He has a pretty girlfriend, and he has a job that, while not particularly interesting or challenging, pays the rent. Then one day two unnerving changes are suddenly thrust upon Reed: his girlfriend shaves her head and he gets laid off from his job.
Can Reed learn to accept Penny’s new look? Can he overcome his fears of starting over in the job market? “Sixes and Sevens” explores these questions and others with the perfect balance of comedy and drama.
