Overview

Anna is dreading another tourist-filled summer on Dune Island that follows the same routine: beach, ice cream, friends, repeat. That is, until she locks eyes with Will, the gorgeous and sweet guy visiting from New York. Soon, her summer is filled with flirtatious fun as Anna falls head over heels in love.

But with every perfect afternoon, sweet kiss, and walk on the beach, Anna can’t ignore that the days are quickly growing shorter, and Will has to leave at the end of August. Anna’s never felt anything like this before, but when forever isn’t even a possibility, one summer doesn’t feel worth the promise of her heart breaking….

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Anna is ready for the inevitable predictability that is summer on her tiny Georgian island working at her parents' ice cream shop and hanging out with her friends. But things do not go quite as she had hoped when she finds herself the third wheel in a previously Three Musketeers-ish relationship after her two best friends decide to hook up. And then she finds herself falling for Will, a summer visitor from New York City and riding the roller coaster of love for the first time in her life. The clash between Anna's ideas of an out-of-towner and Will's actual personality and her inability to deal with the heartbreak that will come with summer's close cause her to break up with Will and do some soul searching. She comes to better understand her place in the small town and her hopes for the future while learning that anything worthwhile requires some risk. Cliched and predictable yet comfy as your favorite pair of jeans, all the uncertainty, awkwardness and magic of a first love is captured in this fun, beachy read. Reviewer: Amy McMillan
School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Anna thinks her upcoming summer is going to be just like her previous ones—surviving the heat of her Dune Island, GA, home by going to the beach; working in her family's ice-cream shop where she invents some popular flavors; and spending time planning her escape when she graduates. However, everything changes when she sees Will, a summer tourist (or "shoobee," as the locals call them), at the annual end-of-school bonfire. Anna and Will's relationship moves slowly, heating up with the temperature and hitting some rough patches as Anna tries to prevent herself from getting hurt at summer's end. Though equally smitten, Will is more philosophical—they should enjoy the time they have; maybe the relationship will survive beyond August and maybe it won't. Anna's first-person narration is appealingly genuine as she experiences the emotionally potent highs and lows of first love and reexamines her own self-image and life expectations with newfound perspective. The teen characters, and their interactions, are well drawn, as is the vividly described island setting. Pleasant and languid, and unfolding at the pace of an unhurried summer's day, this novel will appeal to girls who like their romances sweet and non-paranormal.—Suanne Roush, Osceola High School, Seminole, FL

    A Charming and Realistic Story

I am not usually one for these summer romance books, but Sixteenth Summer somehow struck a chord with me. The character of Anna, is incredibly easy to relate to; she embodies the image of the "girl next door". She is kind, yet willful and has an easy confidence, but is still unsure of who she is, or who she wants to become. She definitely has her flaws and she has a great deal of growing up to do. Watching her navigate her relationship with Will or the course of the summer is simply refreshing.

Obviously, the center point of this story is the romance between Will and Anna. However, I do not feel like it was overdone; which is often the case in these sort of books. The story is so undeniably realistic that it almost feels like you are reading about your own past. There were a number of parts that I was able to easily place myself inside the character of Anna, having experienced some similar situation.

It is easy to see why Anna falls for Will, because he pretty much embodies every boy I ever crushed on during those years. He is a bit awkward, a tad shy, rather sensitive and undeniably charming. He accepts and loves Anna for her quirks - isn't that what we all want?

The tone of the book presents you with a bit of a conundrum - it is both fluffy and depressing at the same time. Honestly this book embodies the term "bittersweet". It has one of those endings that you don't necessarily want, but yet, it needs to be that way.

Sixteenth Summer isn't a deep thought-provoking work, but it's entertaining, easy to relate to and charming. It's realistic story, one that traps into the bittersweet nature of life. Dalton transports you back to your own sixteenth summer, when possibilities were endless and love was around the corner.

    A Must Read

I'm a fifteen year old girl who is constantly reading. I like books by Sarah Dessen and love the I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have To Kill You series, the L.A. Candy series, and The Winnie Years Series, and Secrets of My Hollywood Life series. This book was really good. It made me want to keep reading it and it was very well written. At one point in the book, I was so lost in it that I forgot that the icky weather was only occuring in the book, it was actually sunny outside. The way it's written makes you feel everything the main character is feeling. This book is definitely one of my favorites. It's a really good summer book and if you're looking for one to bring to the beach I highly recommend this one. It's around 170 pages long, which i consider short, but the pages were so packed it didn't even matter to me, I still felt like I got all the detail and everything else that would be in a longer book. In short I would call this book a cute, sweet, romantic, summer-read that I would highly recommend.

    Great love book!

As I have said before I am a totally romance junkie. Nothing can make my heart melt more then reading about two people falling in love. This story is very simple. Two people falling in love over summer and dreading the ending of summer in which one must leave back home.

From the very beginning of this book I smiled, a lot! I love watching both Will and Anna meet and be all nervous. I love reading their feelings and seeing them go on first dates. It made me want to fall in love over and over again. Anna and Will have a great summer with passionate love that you never want to end. It will always be something that they will remember the rest of their life.

The thing about summer love is the ending. I knew it was coming because nothing broke these two up. The fear crawled into Anna like a disease and she started to pull away. I understood her fear. I felt the fear for her. I was glad that she was able to see past that and spend as much time as she can with Will. I loved the way the book end. It was a bittersweet ending that had so much love in it, it was overflowing the pages. The love was strong and never ending.

    Perfect!!

Normally I am not a fan of the summer romances that come out, but this one was better and not at all predictable. The romance that brews between Anna and Will is realistic and so many times I could put myself in her shoes and go back to those summer days of first love.
It is hard to see them break up, but you know it has to happen. It cant be totally perfect all the time, but they deal with it maturely and while the ending wasn't what I wanted, it was done in the best way possible.
Anna and Will are perfect together, and you know enough of Caroline and Sam, and families that you feel as if you are part of a cute little group on the beach. I would have loved to be in this town for the summer. I could totally see myself walking the boardwalk and hanging out at Scoops. Anna is a girl that anyone would love to call a BFF and I totally recommend this book to anyone. Its the perfect summer book!

    Good Book, Bad Ending

This was an amazing book, until the end. I hated the ending. It is the worst when you spend time reading a book and then the ending is very bad

    Amazing Book

Great book, good story line, only thing i didnt like was the ending. How it just ended without knowing whats going to happen nd it left me sad and sort feeling how she was feeling. I think the author really touched peoples emotions with this book. But i can say it is very hard for someone to live in the now, and not think about the future.

    Nice summer read

(Review copy of Simon & Schuster eGalley)

Anna Patrick is not looking forward to summer this year. Her two best friends, Caroline and Sam are now a couple and she feels like a third wheel. Though plenty of the other boys on the island have shown an interest in Anna, she isn't interested in them. She wants to get away and longs for some time away from the tourists on Dune Island. Every summer it's the same: the beach, hang out with friends, then go to work at her parents ice-cream shop. Not to mention having to deal with all of the "shoobees" (she and her friends nickname for the tourists - they wear shoes on the beach - the horror!)

Her attitude quickly changes when she locks eyes with Will Cooper at the start of summer bonfire. Will is from New York and is spending the summer on the small coastal island with his mother and older brother. Soon, Anna & Will are spending plenty of time together, and before she knows it, Anna finds herself head over heels for this boy from New York. Will is her first boyfriend, and she has never felt like this before. Soon Anna has to face the inevitable: At the end of the summer, Will has to leave. Can she possibly risk having her heart broken? Would it be better to have a few weeks of love and bliss only to have to let it go, or should she break it off before she gets her heart broken?

The author has written a very believable book about first love. As the reader goes on Anna's journey with her, they feel every emotion she is feeling. You feel the excitement of her first kiss, the giddiness at spending time with Will and the sadness as the summer approaches it's inevitable end. This is definitely a book every romantic should take with them to the beach this summer.

    Review from Blkosiner's Book Blog

Sixteenth Summer is a perfect beach read. It has fun and easy to relate to characters and it perfectly sums up a summer love.
Anna is a good main character, she had her own quirks that made her unique, but her voice is good. Ms. Dalton is able to remind me of those feelings as Anna is experiencing them.
Caroline is a great best friend, and I love the bond and history that they have as well as the addition of Sam, as a good example of how boys and girls can actually be just friends (Sam and Anna) and how it can develop into something deeper (Sam and Caroline) but I also like with Sam and Caroline they had to learn all over again how to be together, because they were trying to hard to make something perfect that was making them unhappy when what made them happy was basically the way that things were before.
Will is dreamy, sensitive, awkward and charming. He plays his role in the book well, and I found myself falling for him just like Anna.
Without being too spoilery, I really like how they were realistic about their futures, even though they're hopeful.
So, if you're looking for a light and fun summer read, you have it here with Sixteenth Summer.
