Skalkottas: String Quartets 3 & 4

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Scott Paulin
The string quartets of Nikos Skalkottas 1904-49 are bold and powerful monuments of modernism. His musical language is a unique amalgam of many of the trends of his time; the imprint of Schoenberg is audible, but there's an occasional folk flavor that may derive from Bartók's influence, and the transformed citations of waltzes and other dance forms hark back to Mahler. Both of Skalkottas' last two quartets were written after his return to Athens and show his musical thinking in a process of expansion; the Fourth Quartet is nearly twice as long as the Third, with an almost symphonic scope. Skalkottas' music has languished in obscurity for too long, partly due to chauvinism against composers from the margins of Europe. Fittingly, an excellent Greek ensemble, the New Hellenic Quartet, fiercely breathes life into these demanding scores in a valuable revival of this composer's distinctive musical voice.
