Overview

Long before he became late-night TV's most sleep-deprived star on Insomniac, Dave Attell patrolled comedy clubs across America, honing his twisted, risky, and risqué riffs and establishing himself as every stand-up's favorite comic. Skanks for the Memories -- the title is the only old joke on the whole album -- goes along way to conveying Attell's primary strengths: the ability to move his jokes into almost dangerously perverse and unexpected territory. Whether he's musing about watching Girls Gone Wild videos backwards so "it seems like the girls learn a lesson," steering a consideration of drunken blackouts ("I like to call it 'Time Travel' ") into a Kafkaesque riff that winds up in the Fry-o-lator at McDonald's, or recalling -- in an uproarious moment -- the horrifying soundtrack to his first sexual experience, Attell is way out there, shattering setups, turning himself into a punch line, blurring the boundaries between tastelessness and genius. Longtime Attell devotees will miss some of his most crazed jaunts into, say, gay porn ("I like to think of it as two guys who showed up early"). But they can take solace in the fact that their late-night champion -- he's been up all night refining his riffs for years, after all -- will have a follow-up album just as hilariously warped as his first.

All Music Guide - Michael Cusanelli
Dave Attell is best-known for his Comedy Central series Insomniac, where he tours and documents the nightlife of cities all over the United States and Canada, but he makes his living as a journeyman standup comedian. His CD Skanks for the Memories fully represents the years Attell has dedicated to honing his act. The CD is full of familiar bits from his television appearances and even more material that could not be experienced on broadcast or basic cable television. His wit is as sophisticated as it is sophomoric. There are enough jokes about private parts, sexual orientation, and drinking to satisfy any frat boy, but there are also insightful barbs at religion, politics, and relationships for the more cerebral. The golden age of comedy recordings is long gone and most comedians are not subtle enough to satisfy the format, but Attell is able to bridge the energy needed to entertain a visual audience and the wit needed for the aural. Overall this CD is hilarious and achieves the goal of any comedy recording, which is to induce the owner to reach for it again and again.

I love Dave Attell. I love insomniac and I love his stand-up. This cd is AWESOME. I listened to it on my diskman on the subway the first time I heard it and I was laughing so hard a woman thought I was having a seizure! I listened again the other day and I laughed just as hard. You catch more and more each time you sit with it.
