Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Beverley Fahey
Nick plans to spend his summer at the skate park practicing his skateboard moves, but a run-in with rival and bully Brandon results in a broken board and sprained wrist. To make matters worse his mother grounds him for two weeks. Confined to watching videos, Nick finds a trick he can perfect at home and perform in the grom (amateur) competition. On the day of the big event, Nick pulls off the trick to go to the top of the scoreboard, while Brandon has to be satisfied with third place. One-dimensional characters, pedestrian writing, and little or no plot result in little to recommend this book. Cartoon illustrations add nothing. A very reluctant reader who is consumed with everything about skateboarding may be enticed to read this title, but it would not excite him enough to pick up another book.
