Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Skateboarding is another of the extreme sports that has grown immensely in popularity over the last ten years. This title in the "To the Extreme" series provides the early reader with a brief sketch of the sport. Though easy to read, unlike the rest of this series, the organization of the information in this title seems disjointed. The author begins by describing a type of trick then moves into the equipment. While the photographs are colorful and show great air, there should have been photographs that supported the text better. These photographs could have been more diagrams and less flashy moves. As with the other titles, there is a glossary. Often within middle and high school libraries, the struggling reader is forgotten as far as reading material selection, leading them to read what might be an uninteresting or inappropriately low-level book. This series—while indicated for early readers—provides subjects that can allow older children with reading issues to become engaged. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 6 to 10.
