Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tiffany Erickson
The tricks and history contained in this volume will make perfect sense to those readers who are immersed in the world of skateboarding. Everyone else will feel slightly lost. That being said, this volume will introduce and explain many complicated, but mostly doable, tricks to enthusiastic skateboarders. The thirty tricks are divided into seven parts based on the type of skateboarding they represent. The history of each trick is detailed, including the originator appearances in contests, magazines, video games and instruction videos. The tone of the book is causal, but not sloppy, with plenty of slang that makes up a skateboarder's vernacular. Some notes of caution are given, advising skateboarders to learn simpler tricks and use them as building blocks for larger tricks. One trick, the Loop, is shown for demonstration purposes, but readers are advised not to try it until they rank as a professional. While not for the novice skateboarder, experienced skateboarders looking for new thrills will be interested in this volume. Recommended for libraries with active skateboarding collections and subscriptions to Thrasher magazine. Reviewer: Tiffany Erickson
VOYA - Jay Wise
Serious skateboarders looking for descriptions of high-level tricks need look no further than this title. Beginning with the author's personal and emotional introduction, the book describes thirty tricks that have made skate history, from the late 1960s Bertslide to Danny Way's landing the Great Wall of China 360 Air in 2005. Numbered stop-action photos spread over two to three pages, giving step-by-step visuals of each trick from start to finish, follow written summaries of each move. Tidbits on skateboard design and graphics complement pictures, and quotes from a veritable "who's who" of skateboarders serve as a time line of the sport's beginnings through the rise of vertical and freestyle boarding to the aggressive, urban street-style approach popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The volume ends with a detailed list of books, magazines, skateboard camps, museums, shops, and Web sites that add a great deal of value to the book. These pluses notwithstanding, there are some negatives to this title. Each description assumes readers are familiar with skate language, and the lack of both a glossary and levels of difficulty limits the title to intermediate or advanced skaters. Photos show skaters with and without helmets, and there is no mention of or emphasis on safety or the potential danger each trick might pose. Nonetheless the book's combination of detailed "how-to"s and an inside look at modern skate culture make this guide worthy of consideration, especially if skateboarding is a serious sport in the community. Adult/High School- This is a unique take on a how-to book with its combination of sports, culture background, and quotes from skateboarding greats. Each trick is introduced with a brief history, including its inventor, and a brief description of it. Black-and-white photos of the trick being performed and more detailed instructions of how to complete the move follow. The book does not condescend to readers, and the pictures are more interesting than the illustrations in most how-to titles. This is a strong addition to collections; it's great for browsing, for readers seeking tips and instruction, and for those interested in learning about the history of skateboarding.-Mary Ann Harlan, Arcata High School, CA
