Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the fifth edition of one of the go-to books in orthopedic trauma and a must have for orthopedic and medical libraries. It is a wonderful reference for every orthopedic surgeon who takes general trauma call and needs access to the best available information in the field. This edition comes with access to the online version.
Purpose: According to the editors, this edition follows in the footprint of previous versions in being dedicated to conveying comprehensive information on the basic science, diagnosis, and treatment of acute musculoskeletal injuries and post-traumatic reconstructive problems. It is a wonderful bonus that this edition is accompanied by the online version that gives users access 24-7.
Audience: The audience includes all orthopedic surgeons who take emergency room call, and care for patients with musculoskeletal trauma — basically all of us. Residents in training will find it a great go-to reference. The renowned editors once again bring together a wonderful group of elite contributors who have produced a great two-volume reference.
Features: The two volumes cover the entire gamut of skeletal trauma, ranging from general principles, the basic science of injury and healing, and disaster management to in-depth presentations of each anatomic site. Chapters are well written with wonderful pictures and each one can stand alone as a key reference.
Assessment: My reaction is "Wow!" This is a great new edition and a wonderful reference for all orthopedic surgeons. It will be a well-used book in our residency library and I will feel more secure knowing that I have access to the online version 24-7 when I am on call.
