Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The human body is amazing. This "Scholastic Science Reader" takes a look at the bones that make up our bodies. As babies we have about 300, but as adults we have 206. That is because many bones fuse as we age. Bones are rather light and only constitute 20% of our body weight. They also protect vital organs and help with movement. The pictures and illustrations clearly show the points made in the text. Some words are described phonetically in the text. There is also a glossary and an index. For anyone interested in learning more about the human body, this book will be an excellent start. A Level 2 book.

The human body is amazing. This Level 2 book in the "Scholastic Science Reader" series takes a look at the bones that make up our bodies. As babies we have about 300, but as adults we have 206. That is because many bones fuse as we age. Bones are rather light and only constitute 20% of our body weight. Interestingly only the outer part of a bone is hard; the inner part is spongy. Bones are attached to one another by ligaments and bones connect at joints. The author describes the various types of joints. Bones also protect vital organs and help with movement. The muscles are attached to bones. The pictures and illustrations clearly show the points made in the text. Some words are described phonetically in the text while the words in bold can be found in the glossary. For anyone interested in learning more about the human body, this book will be an excellent start. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
