Overview

There's such a thing as being too smart for your own good and Harry Dobbs is about to find that out.

Thirty-two-year-old Harry Dobbs is a skeptic. Literally. He makes his living debunking fake psychics, exposing faux miracle workers, and preventing healers from scamming innocent people.

When Harry gets hired by the Catholic Church to go undercover in a quaint New Hampshire town and assess the inner-workings of a religious cult, he figures it'll be easy money.

But what he first thought would be a simple debunking job turns far more sinister. The cult is hiding a dark secret, something worse than Harry could ever have imagined. And if Harry uncovers their secret, he may inadvertently unleash something into the world that was never meant to be released.

As it turns out, being a skeptic might not just cost Harry his job, it might cost him everything--including his soul.

The Skeptic is a chilling kindle occult thriller in the tradition of Stephen King.

    Intense Thriller

I really enjoyed this book. I purchased it this morning and just finished it tonight. The Skeptic is about a man, Harry, that doesn't believe in faith or religion, but explains everything with science and believes only what can be proven. At first, Harry came off as arrogant and insensitive, but he had enough going on his life that I couldn't help but to empathize with him and wanted things to work out for him. When his brother needs to get an expensive surgery, Harry takes a job from a priest and thinks it will be an open and shut, easy money maker, type job. Things start to get very strange and really get out of hand for Harry. I kept thinking the story would take a turn and go this way or that way, but it never did. There were times when the book got my heart racing and I couldn't read fast enough! The book was very well written and it seemed the author did a bit of research for it as well.

I really enjoyed this book it's an easy read pretty predictable most times but that's what makes it so enjoyable to read...I believe the ending could have been a little better put together but overall I really enjoyed it.

    Wow...

I bought this book because it was 3 bucks and had an awesome cover. I'm just that type of guy. I'm also the type of guy who doesn't have great needs when it comes to books and movies. That being said, I loved the book. I almost quit reading it a few times because Harry's wife reminded me of an ex I never want to see again and he reminded of myself.

If you're a fan of mysteries and horrors, I'd recommend this just for kicks. It's fun to watch stuff unfold regardless of how in-depth things are or are not.

If you're a highly critical person and need your books (or movies if you're that type of cat) to be perfect formulas with little to no logical flaws, this isn't for you. I couldn't find any flaws, but I could tell that I was overlooking them, if that makes sense.

    Enjoyable read

I hadn't tried this author before so, I took a chance. I found this to be a very easy read, fast moving with enough plot twists to keep it interesting. I would recommend this book.

    Couldn't even finish it.

I'm not sure how I ended up buying this book, but whatever I paid for it, it was too much. I tried, but after a few hundred pages, I just wanted the last hour and a half of my life back. I felt like I was grading homework from "Creative Writing 1001".

I'm sorry to say I put it down after the first half. There are a lot of grammatical errors, but I just ignored those. Niz is strong with dialog, and that kept me going for a long time. The book is 800+ pages, but on my nook 1 page = 1 screen. It reads quickly and flows well. But - I couldn't get passed one glaring problem. The main character, Harry, is inconsistent. In the beginning, he doesn't believe in the supernatural but does believe in the evils of men. By the middle of the book, he is in absolute denial about how deep he has gotten himself and his wife into trouble. He should be worried about what the PEOPLE of the town are doing, even if he disbelieves the occult. Instead, he is clueless and, I'm sorry to say, just plain stupid, especially after the scene in the basement of the strip club. I made it a short ways after that scene and stopped. Maybe I'll pick it back up at a later date. Niz's writing flows very nicely though. I would not rule out reading another one of his books. This one just didn't work for me.

Good story, but desperately needs an editor.

The story has great potential. It is interesting and captivating. However, the writing detracts from the enjoyment of the story. The writer may not adequately use the spell check or grammar checking capabilities available in most word processing packages today. There is a constant misuse of "then" and "than" with several typo's throughout the book. There are also a lot of false starts that add nothing to the flow of the story nor do they influence the outcome. For example a character may consider, or think about, an action in the first clause of a sentence, but discard the idea in the second clause of the sentence. It may be something as mundane as "He thought he would get a glass of water, but didn't." I gave it 3 stars for the plot. If it were possible to rate technique separate from plot, the plot rating would be higher, but the technique would be zero or one stars. This book really needs an editor or the author writing classes to help put a good story into a good book form.

Not a bad book. Several errors with "than" and "then" Asked about this at local Barnes and Noble store today and found it was probably a self-published book. That being said I feel better about the value of this product. Noticed in "Compelled," by same author, there are similar comments about the same errors.
