Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A clever cross between a greeting card and a novelty book, this card-stock paperback extends a heartfelt wintertime invitation to readers to snuggle and giggle together. The repeated refrain is simple: "Skidamarink a-dink a-dink,/ Skidamarink a-doo,/ I love you." The verse's elaboration on the theme may border on cliche ("I love you/ in the morning/ and in the afternoon./ I love you/ in the evening/ and underneath/ the moon"), but Karas delivers the message with a wink. The winsome illustrations and the book's double-flap folds will keep youngest readers eagerly turning the pages to see the antics of a captivating polar bear and penguin. The white, potato-shaped bear hunkers down on an ottoman ice cube "skidamarink" as the green-hatted penguin skates to the edge of the page. A single turn of the flap reveals "a-dink" the penguin nearly falling off the ice flow. A second turn of the flap finds the penguin splashing in the blue water. Skate marks extend the visual action. The lumbering bear watches the penguin twirl like a top, as if releasing pent-up feelings, and readers can see the heart-shaped path the penguin has carved into the ice. As an alternative to a Valentine or Christmas card, or as an inexpensive gift for any time, this silly, snowy book will warm hearts both large and small. Ages 2-6. (Dec.) Children's Literature
An adept ice-skating penguin rescues a polar bear from skidding off the side of their ice floe. Not only that, but the penguin further impresses the bear by skating swirls that form a heart. Finally, the two sit together on the bear's scarf and look out at the moon. The light-hearted tone of the illustrations perfectly suits the words of this popular children's song. The double-folded flaps reveal the humorous incidents. Karas' characters are fluid in their movements, and the clean look of the pages is inviting. This is a delightful way for adults to share the song with children, although the tune is not included. This will be popular for Valentine's Day—or any day a cuddle is called for. 2002, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, $6.95. Ages 2 to 6. Reviewer:Sharon Salluzzo

PreS-Gr 1-Playful pictures of a penguin and polar bear couple ice-skating are a fitting accompaniment to this familiar love song. The animals allow readers to see the lyrics in a new way. Their amusing antics and the foldout pages combine to create a terrific preschool read-aloud. Like Paul O. Zelinsky's illustrated versions of The Wheels on the Bus (Dutton, 1990) and Lorianne Siomades's The Itsy Bitsy Spider (Boyds Mills, 1999), this is another good way to encourage young listeners to become book lovers through a combination of a well-loved song and entertaining art.-Shara Alpern, The Free Library of Philadelphia Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
This engaging piece of tomfoolery will be a fidgety reader's delight (though it must have been a bookmaker's nightmare). The scant and cockamamie text can be read as a poem or a song, and it is revealed to the reader by turning double flaps that unfold on each page. This provides for plenty of hands-on action. A polar bear and a penguin-of the naively drawn, cuter-than-buttons persuasion-are skating about on an iceberg. "Skidamarink," says a fold. "A-dink," says the next and the next. (Penguin splashes off the edge.) Next it's bear's turn to be saved by penguin. Ultimately, and rather haltingly, the verse emerges: "Skidamarink a-dink a-dink, skidamarink a-doo, I love you." (Penguin's skated a heart in the ice.) "I love you in the morning and in the afternoon. I love you in the evening and underneath the moon." The duet continues until the two are seated on the edge, looking at the moon. Each page fuels and satisfies expectations as the foldouts deliver their goods, and it is a testament to Karas's sweetly disarming artwork that these two don't appear an oddly matched couple, but made for one another. Does your child love music?

If your child loves music, they will love this book. My 19 month old and I first heard the song at story time at the library. Later I sang the song to her and now it's a favorite! The story is simple and fun!
