The Skilful Physician, originally published in England in 1656, is a collection of natural recipes for disease remedies, perfumes and treated wines. Intended for a popular not a professional audience, the book emphasizes preventive medicine through healthy diet and life-style. The compendium is representative of popular medical texts of the mid-seventeenth century, a genre that includes the well-known Culpepers' Complete Herbal written by Nicholas Culpeper and first published in 1652. Unlike Culpeper's Herbal which has been reprinted extensively, The Skilful Physician has never been reprinted. This edition, supplemented by a new preface, introduction, glossary and table of medicinal natural ingredients, makes a fascinating work available to modern scholars and a modern public.

"...provides natural remedies with an emphasis on preven- tative medicine through a healthy diet and lifestyle... first published in England in 1656, it now includes a new preface, table of medicinal natural ingredients, & glossary."

Editorial Reviews

Michael A. Flanery
...The reader is really getting several books in one: first, the text of The Skilful Physician itself; second, an informative historical essay of health and healing during the mid-17th-century; third, a medical glossary of terms; and, finally, a brief but interesting gallery of 17th-century wood cuts. The editors of The Skilful Physician have clearly put a considerable amount of work into this reprinting. Those interested in the history of medicine and pharmacy, as well as those interested in popular health and healing in 17th-century England will find much of interest in this book.
A collection of recipes for natural disease remedies, perfumes, and treated wines, plus advice in diet and lifestyle, originally published in England in 1656 for a popular rather than professional audience and never before reprinted. Includes an introduction on 17th-century English medical theories and practices, a glossary, and a table of medicinal ingredients. For scholars and general readers.
