Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“The work of Charles Burns is a vision that's both horrifying and hilariously funny, and which quite..... human! —R. Crumb”
Ray Olson
The roman noir has devolved from the fiction of James M. Cain through flicks like "Out of the Past" and a raft of often excellent French imitations to today's adult comics. But while non-U.S. comics creators produce fairly straight new noir stuff like the Sinner series by Argentine expatriates Munoz and Sampayo, U.S. artists use the genre satirically. Burns is probably the best of the noir satirists. In 1988, his "Hard-Boiled Defective Stories" jokingly demolished the noir mystery, and now it's the noir love story's turn. In this foot-tall paperback, three interlocking heartthrobbers tell the torrid--and ludicrous--amorous adventures of a young man who receives a dog's heart from a cut-rate transplant surgeon, a millionaire evangelist doing the bidding of space aliens, and a woman whose scarred war-veteran husband won't sleep with her. The plots and their developments are right out of the weirder pages of the "Weekly World News", while Burns' artwork exploits the high-contrast chiaroscuro of Hollywood's best noir efforts. The humor's at the expense of the improbabilities upon which not just noir but virtually all genre fiction depends, and mystery, sf, horror, and romance fans not beyond laughing at their passions may be quite tickled by Burns' japes.
