Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
For some people, losing weight is a breeze; for others, especially the obese and the near-obese, shedding even a few pounds can seem like a daunting task. But don't despair: It's not your fault; it's about biology, not deficient willpower. Nobody knows that better than author Louis J. Aronne, the longtime director of New York-Presbyterian Hospital's respected Comprehensive Weight Control Program. From hard experience, Dr. Aronne knows that we can incrementally neutralize our body's genetic programming. In The Skinny on Losing Weight Without Being Hungry he sets out a sensible, humane eating and regimen to change your biochemistry and keep your excess weight off for good. This helpful book contains comprehensive menus, restaurant options, a do-it-yourself home strength-training plan and exercise plans, and more than 50 low-calorie, tasty recipes to get you started.
From the Publisher
“I believe Dr. Aronne has pioneered a new approach to weight loss of obesity. His multi-disciplinary methods remove the guilt and give control back to the patient. In my own case, I no longer live day to day dieting. Food is no longer something to fear; it’s something I enjoy when I am hungry. I have learned to control my hunger using the many tools he has given me. It took twenty-five years to find Dr. Aronne.” —Patricia Wexler, M.D.

“I’ve known Dr. Lou Aronne for more than fifteen years. Before we met, I was eating pork chops and candy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No joke. (I love candy.) Dr. Aronne put me on a path to healthy living, and I’m sure this book can do the same for you. His advice on diet and weight loss is insightful. Dr. Lou saved my life.” —David Letterman

“Dr. Aronne’s care and advice changed my life, and I’m forever grateful.” —Emily Brill

“Dr. Aronne’s new book is the most informative and intelligent approach to understanding weight loss and gain. Starting with page one, you will immediately feel healthier and better off. A must-read!” —Harvey Weinstein

Library Journal

Aronne (director, Comprehensive Weight Control Program, New York-Presbyterian Hosp./Weill Cornell Medical Ctr.; Weigh Less, Live Longer) and Bowman (coauthor, The 90-Second Fitness Solution) focus on the biological and physiological cues and switches that react on a genetic level to prohibit weight loss. Aronne describes a low-glycemic plan of eating in order to help adjust the patient's "fullness gauge," thus helping the body to move toward releasing its excess weight. He offers makeover tips for breakfasts, lunches, snacks, dinners, beverages, and exercise. Tables of the glycemic levels of popular foods and a chapter of recipes help readers apply the concepts of the food plan more effectively. In a feature that's unique to this book, Aronne also discusses drugs, weight-loss surgery, and other techniques for those who cannot lose weight even when successfully following this plan. Aronne's encouraging, medically based text will be popular with individuals seeking weight-loss techniques for stubborn extra weight. Recommended for public libraries.

    more from this reviewer

One of the best books on weight reduction I have ever read.

I have been treating and working with overweight patients for over 40 years. I have read and reviewed literally hundreds of "diet books" during that time. I have never read a book like Dr. Aronne's. It is scientifically accurate, particularly when discussing ghrelin vs. leptin and their interactions, not to mention his coverage of anorectics vs. oretic (hunger producing) substances. This does not overwhelm the lay reader, but lays the foundation for his plan for fat loss. The directions are clear and step-wise, so that even patients with no medical background can understand and follow this routine. It also uses common sense and down to earth eating instructions that can be realistic, but effective. I recommend the book and congratulate the authors for their scholarship and writing talents. Buy two books at least and give one to your primary care physician. J.Tom Cooper, MD, MPH, FASBP
