Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
You have the perfect wardrobe; you just wish that you could still squeeze into it. Coauthors Melissa Clark and Robin Aronson won't deny the allure of a giant, cherry-topped dessert, but they know that too much self-indulgence can make a fatty out of anybody. These two busy ladies (one is a top-notch cookbook collaborator; the other, a mother of twins) eschew "science speak" and strict rules in favor of simple, sound advice about losing pounds without sacrificing your appetite. The book, which includes more than 75 tempting recipes, maintains an invitingly light tone throughout.
Library Journal
Food writer Clark (Chef, Interrupted) and health writer Aronson (The Whole Pregnancy Handbook) collaborate on this guide for women looking to lose those last few pounds and keep the weight off. An appealing presentation effectively combines different fonts, lists, conversational bubbles, and sidebars to catch and hold the reader's attention. The main points of each chapter are summarized in a section called "The Takeaway." The authors write in a bouncy, conversational style that makes the reader feel as if she is sitting with a group of women at a lunch table discussing healthy eating tips. Deciding which food is most wanted and then eating it accordingly; reducing portion sizes; and substituting fresh vegetables, whole grains, and lower-fat alternatives whenever possible count among the authors' suggestions. Most of these commonsense recommendations provide moderate solutions that avoid strict food restrictions or laborious weighing and measuring. Approximately 80 pages of recipes and a two-week sample meal plan appear toward the end. Recommended for public libraries.

Meet the Author

Melissa Clark
Melissa Clark
Melissa and Robin are food lovers whose unique perspectives and hilarious insights make The Skinny relevant to any woman who's ever wanted to look and feel fabulous without denying herself the pleasures of food. Brooklyn resident Melissa Clark adores her out-on-the-town life in New York City, including cocktails and late-night dinners, and still fits sleekly into her favorite little (size 2!) black dress. She's spent her entire professional life associated with food. After working as a cook and professional caterer, she earned an M.F.A. in writing from Columbia University and launched a career in food writing. Her writing appears in The New York Times, Food & Wine, Travel & Leisure, Town & Country, Real Simple, and more. She has also collaborated on 17 cookbooks, one of which received both a James Beard award and the Julia Child Cookbook award in 2000. Robin Aronson likes to write about what she knows. This high-energy mother of twins loves good food, yet has lost her baby weight and still looks great in her little black dress. Before and during her own pregnancy she wrote The Whole Pregnancy Handbook: A doctor's guide to the wise use of conventional and alternative medicine before, during and after pregnancy, with Joel M. Evans, M.D. (Gotham: 2005). She's been editor in chief of the web site for Parents magazine, associate publisher of Tikkun magazine, and managing editor of a website devoted to food and dining. She lives in New York City with her husband and (adorable) twins.

    A great book!

My daughter bought me this book, and I love it! This book is for people who live in the real world. This book does not force you, but gently guides you in how to eat properly, lose your weight and maintain it. A very friendly book, easy to read, great and easy recipes.

    This is real!

I finished this book and loved it. It is a realistic approach to eating and living. This is not a DIEt. It is a way of life and the tips are easy to incorporate. The recipes are fast, easy, and delicious!
