Editorial Reviews

Jerry Griswold
In the growing category of bilingual children's books, the Skippyjon Jones series is refreshing because of its irreverence. Here is linguistic fun and dual-language punning, or something like James Joyce's Ulysses for the elementary-school set…In Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones,…Skippyjon settles upon a new career as a paleontologist, having been inspired by the bone-collecting of the neighbor's dog, Darwin…The playfulness of Schachner's stories is echoed in her artistic style—dynamic and comic sketches, a wide palette of lively colors in acrylic and pen and ink, and an alphabetical mélange of handwritten and printed letters
—The New York Times
School Library Journal

The Siamese kitten returns in another rip-roaring adventure. This time, Skippyjon, who wants to be a famous paleontologist, digs up bones buried by Mrs. Dolly Doohiggy's dog, Darwin, and glues them to his model dinosaur. When his mother warns him to take the bones back before Darwin awakens, the obstinate, pouncing, bouncing Skippyjon instead puts on his cape and mask, transforming himself into Skippito Friskito, a Chihuahua. Searching for more dinosaurs, Skippito enters his closet, which transports him to a jungle. There, the action builds. Skippito reunites with Los Chimichangos, his old canine amigos. Hearing an earthquake, the friends panic; peeping through bushes, they see rowdy dinosaurs of all sizes and types. Using his pickle breath and courage, Skippito saves his pals from harm. Schachner's characters retain their winning personalities. The peppy acrylic and pen-and-ink artwork reflects the playfulness and drama of the text and adds plenty of action and suspense. Many Spanish terms are smoothly integrated into the snappy dialogue. Schachner's energetic reading on the accompanying CD includes the use of different character voices. The recording opens and closes with upbeat music, and orchestral drumbeats accentuate the action in the story. This lively romp is fun for one-on-one sharing or reading aloud.

Kirkus Reviews
That devilish, irrepressible Skippyjon Jones is back in his fourth adventure and digging up big-time trouble-again. Skippyjon loves digging in Mrs. Dolly Doohiggy's garden because that's where her bulldog Darwin buries his bones. And bones lead to dinosaurs. "I'm going to be a famous paleontologist!," Skippyjon says as he disappears into his closet and greets his friends the Chimichango gang. Suddenly they find themselves surrounded by a rhumba line of extinct dinosaurs, and Skippyjon comes face-to-face with a T. Mexito. But dino-dudes are no match for El Skippito Friskito who rules the day, ole. With the familiar acrylic and pen-and-ink illustrations of this goofy pint-size cat who thinks he's a Chihuahua, large-type sound effects, Spanglish words and silly rhymes, fans will cheer for this loco kitty and his funny-bones escapade. Skippyjon AND dinosaurs, what could be better?

My boys (2 and 4) love Skippyjon Jones, and my 4 year old is obsessed with dinosaurs, so when we came across Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones we had to buy it. We got the audio CD with it. They love the story, both of them crack up laughing, especially when Los Chimichangos show up! I think we all have the book memorized by now, it's definitely a family favorite.

    Very Funny!

Just purchased this for my 4 year old daughter. The book comes with a CD with the story being read by the author. My daughter and my 9 year old son just love the book. It is very funny, especially when read by the author with the sound effects. Would recommend for anyone - even Dad loves it!

    Granddaughter's new favorite!

The first night I read SkippyjonJones to my 6 yr old granddaughter we laughed so hard! We had to read it again. Then, in the morning we went on Barnes & Noble.com to find other SkippyjonJones books. We also found that there is a plush of Skippy. Of course she HAD to have it! She will soon have all the Skippy books and it will take even longer to get to bed at night because she can never have just one!!!!

    Great,As Usual

My first graders love this book as they do all of Ms. Schachner's books. They are the most read and worn books in my classroom--even more than books that are several years old! When I told my students that I had a new Skippyjon book, they were on their best behavior all day so we would have time to read it by the end of the day. I've given this book as a gift, and it was just as loved. I can't wait for the next one.

    The Big Bones

Skippy Jon Jones and the Big Bones by Judy Schachner Skippy Jon Jones was digging in Mrs. Dolly Doohiggy's garden because that's where Darwin buries his bones. Next he was running to the house when his mama said don't run with your mouth full. Then he entered the closet. He saw his friends roasting marshmallows on a volcano. Then he came up and joined them all. Then suddenly it erupted. They fell on to the ground. They got back up and saw dinosaurs dancing. After that he jumped up and roared at the dinosaur. Then he woke back up. It was an awesome book. I liked the part when he roared at the dinosaur. I would recommend this book to any grade and kindergarten. Caden S.

    Even 6th graders love it!

I introduce myself to my class with Skippyjon Jones, and the students were quite excited to know that there was a new addition to the family. Another great story just like the original & Mummy Trouble!
