Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Quinby Frank
Appealing little skunk faces peep out from glorious color photographs in this well-constructed information book. Beginning with a dramatic confrontation between a skunk and a naive dog, the book covers the various species of skunks, describes general skunk characteristics and habits, and relays facts about procreation. A detailed explanation of skunk musk, and the way skunks use their primary defense mechanism against predators is included. The reader is also given first aid tips in the unhappy eventuality of being sprayed by a skunk. Skunks are gentle animals and make excellent pets if bred in captivity. They are no longer killed for their pelts, but many still die on the highways, victims of their poor eyesight. Interestingly, since skunk musk is extremely unpleasant, scientists have discovered a way to use it to detect natural gas leaks. The book has an appealing format with useful added information in sidebars and captions. Backgrounds coordinate nicely with skunk colorings and markings. A cautionary note might have been included about the possibility of skunks contracting rabies. Glossary, index, bibliography, and web sites are included. This is an accessible and informative offering in the "Animals Animals" series. Reviewer: Quinby Frank

Gr 4-6

How coyotes are able to adapt to their ever-changing environments; how habitat destruction is forcing a need for protected sanctuaries for deer; how ducks swallow pebbles and stones to help them digest their food; and how to remove the odor of skunk spray are just a sampling of the fascinating facts found in these books. The authors include not only the different members of each species, but also their individual anatomies, diets, activities, and prospects for the future. They describe the creatures' reactions to humans and the effects that human population has on them. The material is well researched and would be an excellent source for reports, and the books have a narrative flow that makes them easy and enjoyable to read. Each title includes expert full-color photography that shows various situations and habitats and supports the texts. Stunning views of the animals in their natural habitats will draw readers in.-Cynde Suite, Bartow County Library System, Adairsville, GA
