Overview

The 82 pages of Sky Child contain 10 insightful essays on topics ranging from morality to the effects of metaphors on our lives to the price of money. The title essay uses the author's experience as a Catholic child to show why the early teaching of moral concepts may be a bad idea.

"Truly Radical Welfare Reform" presents an idea for dramatically cutting the cost of welfare while assuring that everyone in the country will receive help when needed, including proper health care.

"I Have No Respect for the Law" reflects Gillman's own approach to matters of legality, and argues that there really is no need for people to respect the law as long as they respect people and are willing to understand and accept the potential consequences of breaking the law.

"The Metaphorical Life" examines how power metaphors are in terms of their effects on our thinking and decisions, and how we can consciously change our experience of life by changing the metaphorical understandings we use.

"Throw Away the Key" lays out the stupidity of mandatory sentencing of criminals, and suggests that we need better judges rather than formulas which we hope will replace the need for thought.

"America the Anti-Christian Nation" has one of the most extensive collections of quotes by the founding fathers of the United States on matters of religion, along with some sharp commentary.

"The Price of Money" questions deeply what we pay in time, physical work, mental effort, and the compromising of values to get that next paycheck or profit.

"Taxing Fairly" considers the various ways in which citizens are taxed and presents a plan for a simplified and just system.

"On the Non-Duty of Civil Disobedience" is an answer to Henry David Thoreau's famous essay, which Gillman likes but find fault with in one key area: The supposed "duty" we have to right wrongs.

"What Is Poverty?" seriously asks the question, answers it three different ways, and looks at some ideas on how to eliminate poverty and make it a matter of museum-display history.

Sky Child (23,700 words) is part of the "At Your Own Risk Series" by Steve Gillman. The essays in these books are meant to suggest new ideas, open minds, occasionally entertain, and above all to encourage independent thought.
