Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3-5--National Enquirer move over! Here come the Sky Guys! Sharkey appears to be just an ordinary lovable stray when Alison takes him home, but his strange tight-fitting collar seems to cause some rather unusual behavior. When Alison reads a tabloid article about cats being used as spies for the IRS, she's convinced that Sharkey is one of them. Enlisting the help of eighth-grade science genius Marvin, she's determined to unravel the mystery of Sharkey's periodic ``fits.'' Meanwhile, Alison is having problems with her best friend. The plot thickens, of course, when Marvin discovers that Sharkey, indeed, has been ``collared''--not by the IRS but by the Aldebarans (tentacled aliens without any backsides) to explore the Earth by remote control. With its rather convoluted plot and its one-dimensional characters, the story reads like a dime-store novel. It is poorly developed, difficult to follow at times, and some of the details reduce it to mere silliness. The characters are so predictable and stereotypic (the science genius who understands computers but not much else, the self-centered ``teen queen,'' etc.) that one cares little about what happens to them. The dialogue is banal, and having the cat continually refer to its ``mouse dung collar'' seems both inappropriate and unsuitable. Send the Sky Guys packing and soar with one of Cameron's ``Mushroom Planet'' titles (Joy St/Little) instead. --Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI
