Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lorrie-Ann Melnick
Handy Smurf decides that he wants to fly. He uses feathers to make wings like a bird and an umbrella to make wings like a bat, but these ideas do not work. Next he uses cloth to make a kite, but it is struck down by lightning. Despite all the trouble, Handy Smurf is determined to fly. He borrows Papa Smurf’s book of magic and a broom and then recites a magic chant to make the broom fly. Unfortunately, that does not work either. Handy finds a catapult and a hot air balloon but neither helps him fly. Finally, he gets some magic ingredients from Papa Smurf’s workshop, and he is able to fly. There is only one little glitch—he cannot stop flying! His friends help him get down and make him promise that he will forget about flying. This book has a link for watching clips, taking a quiz, and finding more books featuring Smurfs. The book is part of the “Smurf” series and includes two pages with forty “Smurfy” stickers for young readers to either interact with pictures in the book or to create their own pictures. Reviewer: Lorrie-Ann Melnick; Ages 4 to 8.
