Barnes & Noble - Jon Dolan
Kristin Hersh songs go places. Her unhinged melodies and wild-eyed vocals leap from image to image and idea to idea like pinballs, and when she finds existential purchase, her best songs test out a tough, often unyielding emotional terrain most Lilith lasses rarely attempt. Her fourth solo album, SKY MOTEL, is a departure from the alt-folk of her previous solo acoustic work that instead finds her rocking out with a full band sound with most instruments played by Hersh herself on the indie-pop fringe she traveled as leader of Boston's legendary late-'80s Throwing Muses. "A Cleaner Light" and "Fog" could be old Muses tracks, while "San Francisco," "Cathedral Heat," and ...

"A Cleaner Light" and "Fog" could be old Muses tracks, while "San Francisco," "Cathedral Heat," and "Spring" are atmospheric pop leavened by Sheryl Crow producer Trina Shoemaker's layered sound collages. This textured background works beautifully to embolden lyrics like "You have to look close to see what this disease has done to me," which many will read as a reference to Hersh's oft-reported artistic and personal demons. But this is Hersh's most focused record to date. An elliptical song cycle about the schmoozing, boozing culture of L.A., where suckers rehearse their smiles and your future's only a lay away, SKY MOTEL is good, weird satire.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Kristin Hersh's third solo album Sky Motel finds her picking up the electric guitar again for a collection of mature, mercurial, parallel-dimension pop. The album fuses the restraint of her acoustic work with the lush textures of Throwing Muses' later albums, adding Latin percussion and keyboards for a further update on Hersh's signature sound. A subtle and layered album, Sky Motel's pop songs create the most immediately arresting moments. The album opener "Echo" pairs a jazzy electric piano with Hersh's sweetly abrasive harmonies, then explodes into a riot of spiky guitars as she snarls lyrics like "I'm loving everybody/ I'm hating everyone I see." "Fog" and "A Cleaner Light" mine similar territory, delivering the kind of angular, bouncy yet slightly menacing guitar pop that made Muses albums like The Real Ramona and University college rock favorites. Though the gentler songs on Sky Motel take more time to reveal their charms, songs like "White Trash Moon," "Costa Rica," "Caffeine," and "Husk," with their undulating guitars and quietly compelling vocals, make the album increasingly rewarding with each listen.
