Overview

Adventure awaits in the Five Kingdoms—come and claim it in this start to a new series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fablehaven and Beyonders series.

Cole Randolph was just trying to have a fun time with his friends on Halloween (and maybe get to know Jenna Hunt a little better). But when a spooky haunted house turns out to be a portal to something much creepier, Cole finds himself on an adventure on a whole different level.

After Cole sees his friends whisked away to some mysterious place underneath the haunted house, he dives in after them—and ends up in The Outskirts. The Outskirts are made up of five kingdoms that lie between wakefulness and dreaming, reality and imagination, life and death. It’s an in-between place. Some people are born there. Some find their way there from our world, or from other worlds.

And once you come to the Outskirts, it’s very hard to leave.

With the magic of the Outskirts starting to unravel, it’s up to Cole and an unusual girl named Mira to rescue his friends, set things right in the Outskirts, and hopefully find his way back home…before his existence is forgotten.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Brandon Mull has done it again. The author who gifted us with Fablehaven created a rich new world with laws and urgencies of its own. At its center is good-hearted sixth-grader Cole who is captured with his friends by slavers. He escapes, but feels understandably responsible for his Arizona classmates. Things grow even more complicated and interesting as he learns more about Mira, the young girl with whom he escaped. The Five Kingdoms series starter plunges us into a refreshing new realm where monsters, magic, and surprises seem to be the rule of the day. Editor's recommendation.

School Library Journal
03/01/2014
Gr 5–8—Cole talks his friends into visiting a house on Halloween rumored to provide a hauntingly good scare in this fantasy adventure. Instead of a fun evening in the suburbs of Arizona, the teenagers are kidnapped and taken through a portal to be sold as slaves in another world. Cole is sent to work as a Sky Raider, where his mission is to steal valuables from floating castles. This dangerous work helps him forge new friendships with young people who possess special powers. One of these friends is a princess in hiding, and Cole must help her overthrow her father, the evil King, as a way to establish order and help his friends escape slavery. The world-building lacks the necessary description and details which readers expect of this genre. Cole seems to move through the incredulous events without demonstrating any connection to his life on Earth or a real desire to return. The plot contains many twists and turns, but each new encounter is fashioned to outdo the previous one, which strains credulity.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL

    Possible Plagiarism ?

You wanna hear a funny thing ? It's possible Brandon Mull borrowed some ideas for Sky Raiders from me.

I wrote a book called "Jaws of the Vortex." Submitted it to Shadow Mountain (his erstwhile publisher).

Exhibit(s): A. It starts out in a Haunted House that really is a B. portal to another world... (I used the world "portal" in my pitch--and official product description.)

    C. where magic is possible. Dreamlike: sure.

    D. My series is called "Tales of the Kings of the Underworld" or "The Six Kings of the Underworld"--like his Five Kingdoms.

    E. His main girl character is Jenna _Hunt_. My name is Joe Hunt. (So, that's, like, hypnotic suggestion.)

Naturally, of course...I think mine's better. You can see for yourself--and if you don't believe me... It's available on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

What do you know? Fantastic. Sincerely.

    Sweet.

I like it. It has that classic Brandon Mull this-idea-is-so-crazy-but-portrayed-perfectly touch to it. The Brink was an epic idea. The whole Outskirts stuff reminds me of an idea I had years ago, called Seven Skies. Get it? Seven skies instead of seas?

    great for kids and adults

This is an entertaining adventure story that is hard to put down. Four children from very different backgrounds have to learn to trust their instincts (and their spirit animals) and cooperate with each other in order to fight the cruel and devious devourers who are trying to take over the world. This is a good book for a child to read alone and would also be a great bedtime book for a parent to read aloud.

    A must read!!!!

On my nephew's behalf, the claim to be made about this book is that it is EPIC and he can't wait to read the next book in this series. It is the best book he has ever read (and he has read hundreds of books).
