Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This surprisingly toothless final volume of the Dragon Star fantasy trilogy (after The Dragon Token ) reads more like a melodramatic Russian play than like an epic adventure tale. Pol, sorcerer and High Prince of the Desert, must come to terms with his fanatical cousin Andry, High Lord of Goddess Keep, so the two can pool their magic and influence to defeat a barbarian horde that threatens their people. While Pol and Andry strike an uneasy truce in Pol's castle, surrounded by the intrigues and agonizing of their friends and relations, far away the High Warlord of the barbarians holds Pol's wife and child hostage. The major characters languish passively in their lush surroundings while the reader learns of desperate battles for survival through occasional off-stage reports, a device that makes the entire conflict seem unreal. Rawn writes fluidly and creates reasonably complete characters, but there's not enough action to justify the book's excessive length. The tragic climax, when it comes at last, is lost amid the general angst suffered continuously by all. (Feb.)
Library Journal
With his wife and daughter held captive by the invading army of Vellant'im, High Prince Pol is forced to put aside his old antipathies and accept the help of his cousin Andry, the Lord of Goddess Keep. This conclusion to the second trilogy set in Rawn's world of Sunrunner magic continues the skillful plotting and complex relationships outlined in previous novels. Epic in scope, with a large cast of vivid characters, this belongs in most fantasy collections.
Sally Estes
The conclusion of Rawn's Dragon Star trilogy picks up where "The Dragon Token" left off and follows an intricate series of events that leads to the reluctant cooperation between the High Prince and the maverick Lord of Goddess Keep in preparing for and waging the final battle against the evil enemy Warlord, who has sworn to destroy all the people of the Desert. Once again, Rawn's plotting is complex and her characters are legion, but the pace is brisk and the action exciting as the story moves relentlessly to a dramatic and fitting conclusion. Readers of the previous volumes will come away thoroughly satisfied.

    What a finale!

What a great ending for this series. I only wish Melanie would start another -she leaves you wondering about Jihan and Rislyn , and how Chayla will do as Lady of Goddess Keep.... I can envision 'touching' a dragon...

    Why'd it have to end?

Some of the deepest, best realized characters in all of Fantasy. I loved every book and I'm sad to see this series end.

What more can you say? It's Melanie.....

Melanie Rawn has enchanted many people's minds with her Sunrunner world. The thing about this series is that Melanie makes everything seem possible. In some books you just know that it could never happen. In these you want it to happen. Melanie has grasps hold of your attention and keeps it. Yes, it is a long series but it is worth the time. That's all..

SAD TO SAY THIS IS THE LAST ONE.

Judged harshly by some. This finale book brings a different look into Pol's and Andry's lifes. The conculsions that Pol is forced to make brings more humanity into his charater and those around him. As a sign of the great writer that Rawn is; she leaves you wanting more. You end up turing the book over looking to see if you missed any pages, and then are forced to accept finally that the book is over. Finishing this book will leave you morning for the loss of very virbriant charaters, and their homes.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

As good as The Dragon Prince Trilogy

Quite a few years go by when Melanie Rawn picks this story back up. The baby is grown and we now have a new set of characters. But the Storytelling stays the same. Wonderful graphic descriptions of many different scenes makes you feel like you are there. Take a step into this world you won't miss the one you left for a few hours.
I started my fantasy obsession with this author and have never been disappointed in anything I've read by her. Try it you'll like it!!!!

    I Also Recommend:

    Magnificent

This is a series that I have reread many times, and it never fails to thrill me. Melanie Rawn has created a totally believable world, and man, do I wish I could go sunrunning!! The characters are so well developed, you wish you could meet them! Strong, intelligent powerful men and women, intriguing societies in beautiful, exotic yet realistic settings, Machiavellian plots, and of course awe-inspiring dragons! Everyone I have recommended this series to has absolutely loved it. The only bad thing I can say, is that six books are not nearly enough....I want more! If you are into epic stories, don't miss this one!

    Rawn at her finest

What can I say. Any of the books in the Dragon Star series are a must for scifi fantasy junkies. The complex sets of characters are vividly described and linked together. I would recomend this or any of the three trilogy sets that Rawn has written.
