Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marcie Flinchum Atkins
A hockey game is the setting for this early reader that teaches reluctant readers about synonyms and antonyms. Written as a fast-paced play-by-play of a hockey game, the only indication that this book is about synonyms and antonyms is that there are bold-faced words throughout each chapter. In the first chapter, synonyms are bold-faced. In the second chapter, antonyms are bold-faced. In each chapter a small "Hockey Hint" box indicates the definition of a synonym or antonym. The third chapter uses synonyms and antonyms and indicates how one can use a thesaurus for finding these words. The last few pages of the book includes definitions and examples of synonyms and antonyms, activities for reviewing the words, and an answer key for questions posed in the book. This early chapter book would be a good choice for helping a reluctant reader that enjoys sports to understand synonyms and antonyms. This book is part of the "Grammar All-Stars Kinds of Words" series. Reviewer: Marcie Flinchum Atkins
