Overview

The Dolphin-linebacker-turned-trial-lawyer has two things on his mind: somebody stole $1.5 million from his favorite client, Sam Kazdoy; and someone has murdered Berto Zaldivar, an old buddy who changed careers from lawyering to drug smuggling. The cases seem unrelated until a twisted trail of evidence leads to one man - who has more on the line than even Jake can imagine. Along the way, there's Lila Summers - the breathtakingly beautiful windsurfer who's the expert at "slashbacks."

The action takes Jake from Miami across the Gulf Stream to Bimini and on to Maui where he learns lessons never taught neither on the football field nor in law school.

Editorial Reviews

This continues Levine's Lassiter series about the linebacker-turned-trial-attorney, now investigating the connections between a multimillion-dollar theft, a drug smuggling ring and a murder. (Dec.)
Library Journal
Series lawyer Jake Lassiter, a former linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, tackles a nasty case involving drugs and professional windsurfers. The publication date coincides with the premiere of Lassiter, NBC's made-for-TV movie based on the series.
Wes Lukowsky
While playing backup linebacker for the Miami Dolphins, Jake Lassiter was earning a law degree at night. After working his way through the public defender's office, he is now a partner with one of Miami's oldest firms. His latest adventure finds Lassiter beset on three fronts. His old trial partner is murdered in a drug deal gone sour; Sam Kazdoy, one of Jake's oldest and most eccentric clients, has been robbed of a million dollars in negotiable securities; and Lila Summers, the best female windsurfer in the world--and the prettiest--is in town for an event organized by Jake. Lila is accompanied by her longtime lover/mentor Keaka Kelia, who believes he is the reincarnation of a Hawaiian warrior king. This makes Jake's dogged pursuit of the fair Lila more difficult but not impossible. The three plot lines inevitably converge as Jake investigates the murder, the robbery, and Lila. Along the way, Jake is forced to confront his own fear of aging, his mercenary career, and the nature of beauty. Another fine entry in a strong series.
