About the Author

David J. Maggs, BVSc (hons), DACVO, is professor of comparative ophthalmology at University of California, Davis. He graduated from University of Melbourne before completing small animal and equine internships at Colorado State University and a research fellowship and comparative ophthalmology residency at University of Missouri. He is an editorial board member for Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, founding member of American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology, and 2012 WVC Small Animal Continuing Educator of the year. His major interest is ocular surface disease, particularly feline herpesvirus.

Dr. Miller is a Board-Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist and a Clinical Professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research and clinical interests focus on glaucoma in animals and, recently, he has worked extensively with non-human primate models of glaucoma.

Dr. Ofri is a Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) and a former ECVO Executive Board member. In 2002-2005 he served as President of the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology.

Purpose: It provides the most current diagnostic and therapeutic information in comparative ophthalmology. The book fully lives up to the authors' expectations, providing not only critical explanations of the anatomical and physiological basis of disease, but also clinically applied and tested advice on treatment of ophthalmic disease..
Audience: This book is written for practicing veterinarians, but students and trainees will find it equally invaluable. The authors are experts in their field and have included other experts amongst their invited authors.s.
Features: Following a format similar to other ophthalmology books, this one begins with sections on anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and diagnostic techniques. It then sequentially explores each anatomic site, moving from anterior to posterior within the eye. This eyelid-to-orbit approach makes finding information quick and easy. The tables neatly summarize information, and the 1,000-plus color figures and photographs provide clear illustrations of ocular disease.
Assessment: Of all the available ophthalmology books, this one is the most comprehensive, the best written, and the most useful to practicing veterinarians and students. This is the book I most commonly recommend to veterinary students and practitioners. The easy-to-follow organization, accuracy of information, emphasis on evidence-based medicine, and beautiful color figures and photographs make this book as "fundamental" as its title suggests!
