The Shrike has made Rayne his wife in order to save her from the empty existence her empathy has condemned her to, shunned by all who fear her power. He has revealed his face to her and told her some of his secrets, and there are those who would do anything to discover what she knows. Various rival empires, factions and slavers have offered bounty totalling many millions for his death, and the image she carries in her mind means she is in grave danger should she ever stray from his protection.

Yet still he remains mostly a mystery, a gentle, but aloof companion, and she longs for more. If his enemies capture or kill the Shrike, however, millions of freed slaves will die or be returned to slavery. He is his people’s saviour and protector, and hundreds of thousands will lay down their lives to protect him and sacrifice themselves to avenge him. He is their emperor, who saved them from slavery, and they love him.

An ex-slave himself, the Shrike carries the mental and physical scars of his horrific former life. He started the Slave Empire with a single spaceship and it has grown into the third largest in the galaxy. Even all his warships will not be able to protect him if his rivals discover the truth about him, however, and only one person can betray him. If the Shrike dies, the Slave Empire will go to war with whoever kills him, and the retribution it metes out before it falls will be terrible, bloody, and final…

    Hmm

It breaks my heart to say this but it must be said...this one was a total let down. It just felt like the theme kept repeating itself over and over again i couldnt wait to finish it and not in a good way. I love TC Southwell and her other series but i was very disappointed in the last installment of the slave empire series but i guess they cant all be winners.

Likable characters and flow, but a few problems.

I enjoyed this series. I'm pretty love/hate with most novels, so I'm pleased to put this in the "love" category. The characters seemed likable. The author focused on fleshing out a small number of people, which I liked. Also, the stress of the series had a peak more in the middle than at the end, which made the experience of reading it much more relaxing and enjoyable. I looked forward to reading it each night. So why am I giving it 3 stars instead of 5? Well, there were a few things that bugged me. Certain lines in the books seemed very repetitive. I got the impression that the author tried to get into the "feel" of the book before each writing session, and ended up writing that feeling down again and again. This was noticeable in all three books, with some chapters simply sounding like edited versions of the previous. The author's feeling was well conveyed, but it seemed a little forced. The main characters didn't carry over from one book into the next well. The author really fleshed out some characters, giving their background and personality, then *poof*! Suddenly she barely mentioned them anymore. I could understand if she later realized that one character was boring to write and wanted to get rid of him, but it happened to most of them. Lastly, one thing that really bugged me was the main character's lack of any loyalty toward Earth. I understand that she had a miserable time there, but for being such a touchy-feely person, I just couldn't understand why she didn't think about it more often. Perhaps the author wanted to escape the world so strongly that she couldn't imagine wanting to come back to it? Hmmmm...

    Great series.

Made me really care about the characters. A psychological study of the badly wounded psyche of a slave and how love can facilitate the slow healing process. After reading nine of this author's books, I was thinking that she didn't know how to write about romance. FINALLY a little romance seeps in to the relationship. Still no sex, however. But she has a wonderful grasp of interplanetary fantasy. What an imagination!!!!

I don't have a favorite genre, but I had to buy all 3 books in this series. Very well written and engaging.

Worth every penny and then some

I so thoroughly enjoyed this series. I hated to leave the characters behind. I like this author. Everything I've read is good. To think if I were limited to just a library or bookstore I would have missed this experience entirely. Sad thought.

    Great book

Read all three books in this series rather quickly. The last book was by far the best. The second one dragged alittle bit but was still good. Great series. Will be looking for more books by this author.
