Likable characters and flow, but a few problems.

I enjoyed this series. I'm pretty love/hate with most novels, so I'm pleased to put this in the "love" category. The characters seemed likable. The author focused on fleshing out a small number of people, which I liked. Also, the stress of the series had a peak more in the middle than at the end, which made the experience of reading it much more relaxing and enjoyable. I looked forward to reading it each night. So why am I giving it 3 stars instead of 5? Well, there were a few things that bugged me. Certain lines in the books seemed very repetitive. I got the impression that the author tried to get into the "feel" of the book before each writing session, and ended up writing that feeling down again and again. This was noticeable in all three books, with some chapters simply sounding like edited versions of the previous. The author's feeling was well conveyed, but it seemed a little forced. The main characters didn't carry over from one book into the next well. The author really fleshed out some characters, giving their background and personality, then *poof*! Suddenly she barely mentioned them anymore. I could understand if she later realized that one character was boring to write and wanted to get rid of him, but it happened to most of them. Lastly, one thing that really bugged me was the main character's lack of any loyalty toward Earth. I understand that she had a miserable time there, but for being such a touchy-feely person, I just couldn't understand why she didn't think about it more often. Perhaps the author wanted to escape the world so strongly that she couldn't imagine wanting to come back to it? Hmmmm...

    Hmm

It breaks my heart to say this but it must be said...this one was a total let down. It just felt like the theme kept repeating itself over and over again i couldnt wait to finish it and not in a good way. I love TC Southwell and her other series but i was very disappointed in the last installment of the slave empire series but i guess they cant all be winners.

    Great series.

Made me really care about the characters. A psychological study of the badly wounded psyche of a slave and how love can facilitate the slow healing process. After reading nine of this author's books, I was thinking that she didn't know how to write about romance. FINALLY a little romance seeps in to the relationship. Still no sex, however. But she has a wonderful grasp of interplanetary fantasy. What an imagination!!!!

After reading the first 2 volumes in this trilogy, I immediately

After reading the first 2 volumes in this trilogy, I immediately read this one, spending Father's Day doing so. The relationship between Tarke (the Shrike) and Rayne (the Golden Child) is fascinating and well written. Sometimes the author is a bit wordy (a good professional editor would have helped) but the characterizations are such that a reader can easily become misty-eyed and anxious for the characters' well-being. For those who like epic fantasy, this is an excellent trilogy. In this last volume we learn aobut slave life in this galaxy and what love and friendship really mean.

    About time!

Up, down, back through it yet again... it was about time!!! Great book, actually great series, enjoyed all of them. 3 books in 3 days, love the way it wraps up, how everything ties together. Could not have asked for a better ending, but all the drama had me saying "not again" more than once. Should really read the first 2 to really follow it.

    Must read if you're a sci-fi lover

I don't have a favorite genre, but I had to buy all 3 books in this series. Very well written and engaging.

Worth every penny and then some

I so thoroughly enjoyed this series. I hated to leave the characters behind. I like this author. Everything I've read is good. To think if I were limited to just a library or bookstore I would have missed this experience entirely. Sad thought.
