The night before we landed, a moonless night, I lay on my back atop a pile of furs, gazing up at the canopy of stars that stretched across the black, black sky.

“Indeed, the stars are a thing the gods themselves must admire,” a deep and powerful voice said, startling me. Rugga!

I sat upright, but he still towered far over me. With his face still turned to the heavens, he pushed me back down onto the deck. Caught beneath his foot, I watched the reflection of the stars sparkle in his eyes and cast a spell over his face. In that moment, all flaws fell from him, and he appeared to be a god. I cringed, unsure whether I wanted to hurl myself into the ocean or relax completely and yield to his will.

Bitterness swirled in my thoughts, in my chest. I was his tool for conquest, his collateral against my sister’s claim on the village. I was his tool, one valuable enough to pursue if it were so stupid as to lose itself in the waves.

A tear slipped down my cheek, burning me with its salt. I touched the track it had made, surprised.

A warm, wet tongue licked the tear off my cheek. “What had you expected?” Rugga asked, now kneeling beside me. “First you said you hated me—”

“And I did!” I protested.

“—and now you think you are enamored of me. Both are misplaced ideas of what it means to serve one’s master.”

More tears pooled in my eyes and rolled down my cheeks. The chill in Rugga’s voice cut me all over, and I could only be grateful the rest of the crew was nowhere to be seen. How had I allowed this to happen?

I loved this man, this wise tyrant who owned my body and my mind and considered me a tool for conquering my sister. Had I been standing, I would have thrown myself onto the mercy of the ocean and begged her to swallow me whole.

But Rugga had lifted my shirt and was now tugging it over my head. I spluttered in shock, and he merely pressed my mouth closed with his huge hand. Once the cloth had been pulled free, he lowered his head to my chest and began pressing kisses there.

I lay back, stunned, but kept my eyes on the stars. Rugga took one of my nipples in his teeth and nibbled, teasing groans out of me. Then he twisted hard, and pain jolted through my body. I lifted my hand to stop him, and he slapped it down.

His tongue traced the bulge in my neck, sending delicious arousal coursing through my body. Instinctively, I raised my arms to embrace him, and again, he slapped me down. This time, he was rough, and more pain roared down the length of me. I whimpered, cowed.

His teeth grazed my neck, then bit down, bruising the tender flesh. “Ahhhh,” I grunted, my body spasming. But he did not relent, and slowly, I relaxed. As before, the pain became elevated, transforming into pleasure. I hurt, but it was a delightful hurt. A comforting hurt. A hurt that signaled I was about to be claimed, and all I had to do was obey.
