GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT is the first book of its kind to clearly explain why bedtime is such a challenge for so many kids and their parents, and to offer solutions that won’t torture anyone.”

Armin Brott, author of Father for Life

from the Foreword of GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT, Faith A. Hackett, M.S. Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Courtesy Staff Physician, Johns Hopkins Hospital Staff Physician, Anne Arundel Medical Center
“For all the parents who have lost countless hours of sleep trying the tough love approach of letting the baby cry it out, this book comes as a wonderful, informative reprieve…. I’ve been looking for a definitive how-to book on sleep that I can recommend without reservation. GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT is that book.”

Richard & Shirley Viscarello, Perinatologist and Nurse Practitioner, Maternal Fetal Care, PC, Stamford, CT.
“We unknowingly created our daughter’s sleep problems by never ‘teaching’ her how to put herself to sleep…. The ‘no cry’ solution didn’t work, and letting her ‘cry it out’ was never an option. How could we ask our child to solve the problem by herself that we had created? With Kim’s knowledge and thoughtful, caring approach, we were able to gently empower Sophia to put herself to sleep. Kim has an amazing gift to share and we tell all of our OB patients about her!”

Cleveland Plain Dealer

“West offers ways to soothe both parents and baby…. [GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT] is handily divided into age groups, with suggestions for good sleep patterns beginning at birth…. [It’s] helpful to have it organized in one book.”

Publishers Weekly
In this expanded edition, first published in 2004, child and family therapist West (aka “The Sleep Lady”) further explores the ways parents can teach their infants and toddlers the indispensable skill of falling and staying asleep. West has added the latest pediatric research on sleep safety, pacifier use, and breastfeeding, as well as expanded sections on toddler naps, interpreting newborn cries, and phasing out nighttime feedings. She has also included sections on bedtime baby yoga poses, a chapter on room sharing and bed sharing (encouraging parents to carefully assess their attitudes before making a decision on whether to co-sleep) and postpartum depression. West eschews the “cry it out” approach, which may leave parents feeling guilty and exhausted. Instead, her “Sleep Lady Shuffle” is a gentle behavior modification technique that helps babies gradually master solo sleeping and self-soothing. The author covers such general sleep tips as creating a sleep-friendly environment and using “loveys,” and then offers individual chapters addressing various age groups from newborn to five; readers can readily find information pertinent to their particular child and situation. In this detailed guide, West advises parents to practice patience and consistency, and maintain a united front as they lull their baby into slumber land. (Jan.)

I purchased this book when I had my first baby. I liked how the author had each chapter devoted to a specific age (newborn to 5 years old) and what to expect for a baby's average amount of daytime and nighttime sleep. In each chapter, there was also developmental changes and how those affect a baby's sleep. The beginning of the book talks about the sleep lady's eight rules of infant slumber. I felt this advice really helped me as a new mom to understand my baby. This book works; it has become my token baby shower gift! My first baby was sleeping through the night (bedtime 7:30pm and awake at 7:30am) at 12 weeks and my second baby was sleeping through the night at 8 weeks!

I looked this book up because of a suggestion from the internet when i was looking for help on why my baby at 15 months wasnt sleeping through the night. I bought the book and did the steps and by the third night my baby was falling asleep, in her crib and sleeping through the night. It is a much gentler method than the ferber method and it really does work. This book is going to be my #1 baby shower gift from now on. Thank you sleepy lady.
