Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"The standard of material is very high and, although the book covers most aspects of intervention, both physical and psychological, this is never at the expense of providing an adequate level of coverage. This book represents essential reading for nurses in clinical practice, regardless of specialism or practice setting." Rob Newell, Clinical Effectiveness in Nursing, Vol. 4,, January 2000

Reviewer: Dianne deMoville, RN, C, BSN, MS (Hillcrest Health System)
Description: This is a comprehensive overview of insomnia and its treatments, including causes, contributing factors, and prevalence of sleep disturbance. Assessment tools and specific techniques are well presented.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist healthcare providers in assessing sleep habits of their patients. Also, concrete prescriptions for behavioral changes are outlined, and techniques include addressing sleep hygiene, dealing with tension and anxiety, as well as the role of hypnotic agents.
Audience: Most healthcare professionals who deal directly with patient concerns would benefit from this book.
Features: The authors provide an overview of insomnia, pointing out incidence, causes, and common approaches to management. Several sleep assessment tools are offered as well as information on how to take a complete sleep pattern history. Then specific techniques for dealing with insomnia include behavioral changes dealing with sleep hygiene, progressive relaxation exercises, how to deal with emotional conflict and sleep disturbing thoughts, and a brief review of the role of hypnotic medications. Special circumstances related to age, hormones, and shift work are also discussed.
Assessment: I found this book extremely interesting on a personal level. I thought the techniques shared were well researched, reasonable, logical, and clearly defined. I would think any practitioner would find this book useful when assisting their patients who complain of insomnia.
