Purpose: The purpose, implied by the title, is to present the essentials of sleep medicine that will allow clinicians to practice excellent clinical sleep medicine or to pass the examination.
Audience: Healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with sleep disorders are the intended audience. The author is a prominent authority in the field.
Features: The book is well organized into 16 chapters, each with bibliography at the end of the chapter. Each chapter includes an outline, followed by concise discussion in typical textbook format with liberal use of tables highlighting important points. The topics span the entire breadth of sleep medicine from the basics of sleep, evaluation of sleep disorders, various sleep disorders, sleep across the ages from infancy to older adults, sleep in women, and medications. An appendix includes highlights of the scoring and sample sleep epochs.
