For his fifth studio album, Jack Johnson makes some changes: Recording in Los Angeles for the first time instead of his native Hawaii, the album also promises prominent electric guitar -- a big shift from his acoustic-based sound. But fans can rest assured that Johnson will bring his sunny, laidback songwriting style and intimate lyrics.

Jack Johnson claims that personal losses led the surfing singer/songwriter into darker territory for his fifth album. To a certain extent, all of that is true, as the album does open with an atypically moody number in "All at Once" and there are some darker sentiments lurking here, but it takes some close listening to find the sorrow flowing underneath Johnson's sand-brushed, gentle voice doesn't command attention. His voice lulls and soothes, perfect for his mellow moods. Johnson may use more electric guitar but he's strumming them like acoustics and his overall aesthetic has not changed at all: he's still a laid-back guy singing songs that roll so easy they glide into the background.

    Naturally

To be honest the intial listen was tough. But after a few listens I enjoyed the unforced nature in the development of his songs and this album. After three years waiting I'm happy to have new jack johnson tracks. More mellow mixed in with deeper meloncholy lyrics.

    Amazing

Great cd, definitely one of my favorites. Jack's tone is a little darker and more introspective than on his previous music, but that definitely adds rather than detracts.

    The downward spiral continues.....

This is the same old JJ, just a inferior repeat of "In Between Dreams"....Boring, slow, and literally sleep-inducing. I keep playing it, hoping for a flash of musical light to strike me and tell me what it is I'm missing....I love Jack's philosophy, own every album, and have seen him live more than once...The man has just flat run out of ideas. He needs to bring G.Love in for an injection of Blues and Soul, and this is last CD of his I will buy unheard.

    Brilliant

Great music, he's still going strong. The songs have the same laid back quality without being repetitive. This might just be his best album yet. I especially enjoyed "Enemy" and "Sleep Through the Static"

    sleep through this cd

Jack may have jumped the shark with this cd. Like most TV sitcoms that run out of funny topics and start trying to make social statements as they lose viewers, I'm afraid Jack's attempt to make his political and social statements have made for his worst work yet. Get back to making fun music.

    Wonderful

I love it. A little bit different than his previous albums but he has the same laid back positive attitude that made me a fan of his in the first place. I especially like "Angel" and "What You Thought You Need".

    Another Amazing album by Jack

This album is awesome and already has one of my favorite songs (Angel). Buy this CD you will not regret it. J.J. fills the void of todays music that lacks good lyrics and integrity.

    Great album

Another great album for Jack Johnson. If you are a fan of his previous albums than this one will be just as enjoyable.
