Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This novel set at a summer camp offers much of what one might expect: crushes on older counselors, cabin-mate rivalries, late-night sneak-outs and lots of bonding between campers. Counselor-in-training Sam is at a disadvantage when she first arrives at Whispering Pines in the Catskills. Unlike the other CITs, she is unfamiliar with her surroundings, having never attended a camp. Despite her rookie status, she proves to be a natural leader, but her pride in doing her job well is undermined by catty remarks from fellow CIT Ashley. Fortunately, Sam is able to form friendships with other girls, who soothe her sagging spirit and help her sort out her feelings for two boys, Hunter ("Mr. Ab-solutely perfect") and easy-to-be-with Cole. While Calonita (the Secrets of My Hollywood Life series) is well versed in camp routines and dynamics, some of the escapades-like a gigantic food fight Sam has with her rival-come off as a little cheesy, and some minor characters-especially Ashley and Hunter-appear manufactured. Nonetheless, Sam emerges as a likable, realistically flawed heroine, who proves that good girls can come out on top. Ages 12-up. (May)

Children's Literature - Myrna Dee Marler
Sara Montgomery, sixteen, is a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) at a summer-long sleepaway camp called Whispering Pines in the Catskills. Of course, she has never been to camp before and everyone else in her bunk is a long time summer camper who has graduated to CIT status. The bunk is filled with the requisite number of friendly girls, snobby girls, and one apparently evil spoiled brat who is used to being the Queen Bee because she is the daughter of the owner of the camp and also ravishingly beautiful. Sara's divorced mother is dating the camp owner, fueling more dueling between these obvious antagonists, not to mention the complication of the handsome male CIT who the evil girl dumped the year before but now wants back. He, however, finds himself more attracted to Sara, who in romance novel fashion, is not that experienced with boys. What sets this book apart is the detailed and wholesome fun of camp activities, which Sara and everyone else throw themselves into with wholehearted enthusiasm. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue witty. This is a good summer (or winter) "escape" for girls who have and have not experienced the mixed joys of summer camp. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler

Gr 6-8

Samantha Montgomery is sick of her best friend's boyfriend taking her place. Mal used to call Sam first, sit by her at lunch, and do everything with her. Now it's Mark who's first in Mal's life, it looks like Sam will have to sit through an entire summer of their sickening sweet talk. Instead, she decides to volunteer as a counselor-in-training at a camp two hours away from home. There she finds three new friends, two hot guys, and one bitter enemy. Sleepaway Girls is a fast, uncomplicated read dealing lightly with issues of friendship, first love, and bullying. Though the resolutions seem a tad easy, they're appropriate for the tone of the novel. Sam and her campmates are believable characters and their bonding will make readers want to head for camp themselves. A perfect summer pick.-Heather E. Miller, Homewood Public Library, AL

Kirkus Reviews
Calonita's bland, first-person summer-camp extravaganza about a group of feisty, competitive 15-year-old counselors-in-training plays on some well-worn character stereotypes. New CIT Sam has to make a place for herself within the hierarchy of coed Whispering Pines. Unfortunately her notoriety for having been featured, somewhat accidentally, on a commercial for Dial and Dash Phone and her instant attraction of the cutest male counselor, Hunter, ignite the ire of the most popular girl-who happens to be the camp director's daughter. Ashley (who "looked like she belonged on America's Next Top Model") and Hunter ("an Abercrombie ad come to life") each make Sam's life hell from one forced camp activity to the next. As the jealous leader of their bunkhouse, Ashley delights in tripping Sam up, while fickle Hunter plays with her feelings. Luckily Sam has the support of new friends (the Sleepaway Girls of the title) and the admiration of a Jonas Brother lookalike, Cole, who seems to be real boyfriend material. Besides herding the "peeps, pez, and marshmallows" (younger campers) and staging a walloping food fight, Sam's name-branded camp memories are mostly forgettable. (Fiction. 12 & up)

    Excellent, all the way!

Samantha Montgomery doesn't want to deal with her best friend this summer, especially since all she does is cuddle with her "pookie" little boy friend. Sam decides to go to sleep away camp; her first time ever and she is going to work as a counselor-in-training. She soon makes a small group of friends that care about her and want to bring the vicious, popular Ashley down on her knees. From the first day Sam arrived at camp, Ashley has been terrorizing her so why not get her back? Within her days at camp, she makes friends, finds a crush, and gets a run for her money through all the obstacles she overcomes. And what if first impressions aren't always right?

This book was a delight to read! Author Jen Calonita provides likeable characters with unique personalities while still focusing clearly on the plotline and using a zany twist in her writing. It was amusing and I was entertained the whole time! Being inside of Samantha's mind and reading about the choices she will, would, or might make is laugh-out-loud funny. Though the references are fun and quirky, they are very specific to what teens watch on television and listen to on the radio today so I don't know how long it would be up-to-date. With much potential and a pleasure to read, Sleepaway Girls will easily make it to the top!

(This book is also a very clean read. I only found one mild reference in the whole book and it wasn't in a disturbing way. :)

Jen Calonita Suprises Me AGAIN! :)

I am a huge fan of "Secrets of My Hollywood Life", so when I heard that Jen Calonita had wrote another book, this one being Sleepaway Girls, I had to have it. So, the day it came out I bought it. I sat down, and finished it in one whole night. It was just that good. I fell in love with the characters, and their bonds. It was a great book! It had thrills, chills, fun, swimmming, arts and crafts, shots, Hunter, and Cole. Ahhh Cole. After reading this book i soo badly want a guy like Cole!! :) I had butterflies in my stomach at the very end. I very much hope their is a sequel :)

    Favorite Book!!!!!

I loved this book! I could really connect with the main character Sam, not that I have been in commercials or anything... but I can relate to trying to get the hotest guy at camp and then falling for his bestfriend. The author also makes this a very relatable book, by discribing everything she (Sam) sees in away that tewns would discribe it now makes it fun and easy. You can really understand everything in this book and I absolutly loved it. Its a read tgats hard to put down it will keep you intrested until you finish it!!! READ IT!!

Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita is a great book for young teens.

Sleepaway Girls by Jen Calonita is a great book for young teens. Samantha Montgomery, a teen from Long Island, doesn't want to spend her summer being a third wheel around her best friend (Mal) and her first boyfriend. Sam takes a big step by applying to be a CIT (Counselor In Training) at Whispering Pines, a summer camp in New York Catskills (2 hours away from home). It's her first time doing something without her best friend, so it's a drastic change in her teen life! During her time at camp, Sam makes friends and enemies and crushes. Sam and her friends call themselves the "Sleepaway Girls" and together they have fun and dramatic experiences at camp. Sam learns more about herself—a "people pleaser" according to the Sleepaway Girls and Sam herself. She would fully enjoy her time at camp if it weren't for Whispering Pines' alpha queen, Ashley Hitchens, daughter of the camp director—who is out to humiliate Sam at every turn. There’s also dramatic romance involved— a hot, flirty guy (Sam’s crush at first sight) and a playful, yet comfortable boy to hang with. How will Sam deal with all these crises at once in addition to taking care of her 6-year old campers? Fortunately, Sam’s not alone—the Sleepaway Girls will stick through rough and tumbles all the way! However, will Sam ever learn to say “no” and do the things she loves and not be a people pleaser? Will her eyes avert from the wrong boy and choose the right one? Most importantly—will she take matters in her own hands and learn to use her own voice?
Overall, this book is amazing and greatly recommended for young teens to read over the summer or anytime! The characters are admirable and unique in their own ways—even Ashley!
