This novel set at a summer camp offers much of what one might expect: crushes on older counselors, cabin-mate rivalries, late-night sneak-outs and lots of bonding between campers. Counselor-in-training Sam is at a disadvantage when she first arrives at Whispering Pines in the Catskills. Unlike the other CITs, she is unfamiliar with her surroundings, having never attended a camp. Despite her rookie status, she proves to be a natural leader, but her pride in doing her job well is undermined by catty remarks from fellow CIT Ashley. Fortunately, Sam is able to form friendships with other girls, who soothe her sagging spirit and help her sort out her feelings for two boys, Hunter ("Mr. Ab-solutely perfect") and easy-to-be-with Cole. While Calonita (the Secrets of My Hollywood Life series) is well versed in camp routines and dynamics, some of the escapades-like a gigantic food fight Sam has with her rival-come off as a little cheesy, and some minor characters-especially Ashley and Hunter-appear manufactured. Nonetheless, Sam emerges as a likable, realistically flawed heroine, who proves that good girls can come out on top. Ages 12-up. (May)

I think that Sleepaway Girls, was an unforgettable, touching, and sweet book. While reading the book I felt like I was watching it all. Like I was at the camp watching everything happen to Sam. Wonderful wonderful book. I would highly reccommend this book to any teenager. Sleepaway Girls is a story that people will remember forever.

So, the day it came out I bought it. I sat down, and finished it in one whole night. It was just that good. I fell in love with the characters, and their bonds. It was a great book! It had thrills, chills, fun, swimmming, arts and crafts, shots, Hunter, and Cole. Ahhh Cole. After reading this book i soo badly want a guy like Cole!! :) I had butterflies in my stomach at the very end. I very much hope their is a sequel :)

Sam decides to go to sleep away camp; her first time ever and she is going to work as a counselor-in-training. She soon makes a small group of friends that care about her and want to bring the vicious, popular Ashley down on her knees. From the first day Sam arrived at camp, Ashley has been terrorizing her so why not get her back? Within her days at camp, she makes friends, finds a crush, and gets a run for her money through all the obstacles she overcomes. And what if first impressions aren't always right?
This book was a delight to read! Author Jen Calonita provides likeable characters with unique personalities while still focusing clearly on the plotline and using a zany twist in her writing. It was amusing and I was entertained the whole time! Being inside of Samantha's mind and reading about the choices she will, would, or might make is laugh-out-loud funny. Though the references are fun and quirky, they are very specific to what teens watch on television and listen to on the radio today so I don't know how long it would be up-to-date. With much potential and a pleasure to read, Sleepaway Girls will easily make it to the top!
(This book is also a very clean read. I only found one mild reference in the whole book and it wasn't in a disturbing way. :)

Summery
Sam Montgomery has never been to sleep away camp before but when her best friend Mal gets a boyfriend, Sam is sick of feeling like the third wheel and heads of for a brand new adventure at Camp Whispering Pines to be a CIT (councilor in training). This is a little out of the ordinary for Sam who is not usually seen doing something without her best friend but, she takes the plunge anyways while of course promising lots of video diary's to keep Mal informed about her life at Whispering Pines. At camp Sam makes friends right away with the girls in her bunk and even a few guys. She jumps right in with all the activities, chores and CIT work .
After sending one thirty minute long tape to her friend Mal and receiving a ten minute response Sam decides to focus on her camp life and not worry about Mal anymore. When her camp friends see Sam making videos they decide to form the Sleepaway girls, a fun documentation of their camp days together.
But there is one person that seemed to have it out for Sam from the very beginning; Alexis. Alexis, the camp directors daughter, does everything in her power to bring down Sam and make her camp life horrible and eventually Sam snaps. Sam starts a food fight with Ashely and they get sentenced both to solitary confinement together. There they learn to get over their differences and act civil. At the end of the summer Sam cant wait to come back next year and start a new Sleepaway girl video diary with all her friends.
Likes/Dislikes
I loved this book for many reasons. It was an easy fast read and the subject and characters presented are so easy to get involved with that you feel like you are in the story with the them. The author set up the camp so well with her descriptions in the book I could picture everything from the cabins to the lake. I really enjoyed the fact that the main character was discovering something new, that made it easy for me to relate to. Somethings I would have liked to see differently was that there was so many characters in the book that it was hard to keep track of them all. If the author had cut back and only mentioned necessary characters that would have made the book more clear for me. Also I felt like some parts where a little cliché and could have appeared in any summer camp story, these slowed down the progress of the book.
Messages/Themes
This book had a clear message that everyone needs to stand on their own two feet, trust in their instincts and most importantly be open to new life experiences.
Just Like Me Theme
I could relate really well with Sam because I have never been to sleep away camp, all she was feeling in the begging when she just arrives I know I would have been feeling too. Also I think we have fairly similar personalities and I too love making video diaries.

Overview
When Sam's best friend gets her first boyfriend, she's not ready to spend the summer listening to the two of them call each other "pookie." Sick of being a third wheel, Sam applies to be a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. But what she doesn't realize is that it's not going to be all Kumbaya sing-alongs and gooey s'mores. If Ashley, the alpha queen of Whispering Pines, doesn't ruin Sam's summer, then her raging crush on the surfer-blond and flirtatious Hunter just might. At least she has playful Cole, who's always teasing her, but is oh-so-comfortable to hang out with, and the singular gang of girls that become fast friends with Sam-they call themselves the Sleepaway Girls.
