Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathryn Erskine
In this hysterically funny adaptation of the sleeping beauty story, Mass does a superb job of intertwining the two tales of the prince and princess who, in this version, are anything but conventional. The prince is not your traditional royal—he has no name, his mother is part ogre and, for some mysterious reason, his parents want to keep him away from sharp objects. But sharp objects are even more of a problem for the lovely Princess Rose, who wants to explore everything with wild abandon. Despite banning spinning wheels from the kingdom and providing clothes for the townspeople, Princess Rose's parents are constantly worried about her curse, and she does inevitably prick her finger and fall asleep for a hundred years. The writing is upbeat, breezy, and clever. Chapters alternate between the dry wit of the prince's voice and the headstrong but heartfelt Princess Rose's prose. The interaction between the prince and princess is surprising, witty, and contemporary. A fantastically fun book for both young and young-at- heart readers in the "Twice upon a Time" series.
