Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Also celebrating an anniversary--its 30th--is Whose Mouse Are You? by Robert Kraus, illus. by Jose Aruego. Minimalist art and memorable text are more than the sum of its parts: "Whose mouse are you?/ Nobody's mouse./ Where is your mother?/ Inside a cat," it begins forlornly, but reverses into a joyful ending, with the mouse reuniting his far-flung family and gaining a new brother. This classic story becomes even more enchanting because of the beautiful illustrations by the author. From the title page through the last, the illustrations focus on the smallest of details. Each picture is so full of detail that even after reading it several times there are still interesting things to look at. The young reader will never become bored with this romantic love story and will linger on each page to absorb these well thought-out illustrations. It would make a wonderful addition to any library. 1977, Little Brown,

    The Sleeping Beauty

The fairy tale ¿The Sleeping Beauty¿ was published in 1977. This wonderful classic was retold and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman. Hyman was born in Philadelphia on April 8, 1939 and passed away on November 19, 2004. She illustrated children¿s books and has illustrated over 150. Through Hyman¿s lifetime, she has won a total of four Caldecott Medal awards. She attended and graduated from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. ¿The Sleeping Beauty¿ is about a King and Queen who wished they had a child. One day, the Queen was bathing in a forest pool and a frog appeared. The frog told her ¿Your dearest wish shall soon be fulfilled. Before a year has passed you shall bring a daughter into the world.¿ The Queen was thrilled and went home to tell her husband. The frog was right, and the Queen had a beautiful little girl. The King was filled with joy and threw a big birthday feast, and invited ¿all his friends, relatives, and noble acquaintances, and also the fairy women.¿ There were thirteen fairies in the kingdom and the King ran into a problem. He had only twelve golden plates. The King was embarrassed and scared to give a fairy a silver plate, so he didn¿t invite the oldest fairy to the feast. During the birthday feast, each of the fairies gave the baby a magic gift, such as virtue, grace, wisdom, and much more. Only eleven fairies were able to present their gifts to the new baby before the door busted open before them. The old fairy that wasn¿t invited marched into the room mad because she wasn¿t invited to the feast. Her magic gift wasn¿t a pleasant one and she yelled ¿My curse upon the princess! She shall prick herself with a distaff when she is fifteen years old, and then she shall fall down dead.¿ She left afterwards, and everyone was scared and full of remorse. Luckily, the youngest fairy¿s gift was to soften the curse so that the King and Queens princess would not die. When the princess turned fifteen, you will not believe what happened! I will leave out these details and you will just have to read to find out. Anyways, the Princess did fall asleep and the only way she could be saved was by a kiss from a Prince. The legend about the princess sleeping in an enchanted castle grew throughout the years, and several of young men tried to save her, but they were not successful. Many more years had passed, and a Prince, knowing about the legend, was determined to save the sleeping beauty. Will the Prince ever save the Princess? This books genre is Traditional. Hyman did a magnificent job with the beautiful illustrations. They are very intriguing and they definitely make you feel as though you are part of the story. I enjoyed this retold version a lot, and I am sure children will enjoy it too. This fairy tale classic was wonderfully retold by Hyman. This books age range is 5 to 8. Hyman, Trina S. The Sleeping Beauty. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1977.
