Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In this variation on the story of Sleeping Beauty, the beauty is a cat called Bootsie and the wicked fairy does put a curse on the little kitten. Since the king and queen want to keep Bootsie safe and water is the culprit in this case, all water is banned from the castle. A bit unrealistic since we need water to prepare food, drink and stay alive. But things get pretty smelly and dirty without water to keep clothes and people clean, which is supposed to be humorous. Finally the evil fairy manages to bring her evil wish to fruition and Bootsie falls into a deep sleep. Nothing seems to work in helping her wake up until another cat arrives and makes the happiest sound. All is resolved and there is a happy ending. The soft toned illustrations are quite appealing and the cover is particularly engaging. They are a step above the quality of the story. A step 3 book in the "Step into Reading" series for grades 1 to 2. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
